Are Eschenbach 3x, 6x, 9x loupe magnifiers really $200+ now?

Yikes! We needed to buy 2 more of these for our coin business.

The cheapest I could find these for was $200 (!). I think I bought one just a few years ago for about $100 or so. Last year I think we bought some for $130 (which I thought was a lot at the time).

These are the best magnifiers there are for coins IMHO, but... wow!

I will sell it for less.

They are about $125 last time I looked.

I just bought a loupe made by a company in Belarus (forgotten the name) for about $30.00. I think it is excellent, a little better than B & L; perhaps not quite as good as Eschenbach. YMMV.

I have both an Eschenbach and Zeiss in 3x-6X-9X. They're both very good loupes but my Zeiss feels a little more comfortable in my hand. YMMV.

I've have sweared by these magnifiers for a long time. For this loyalty they've paid us back with a newly designed illuminated magnifier that I woudn't give you 50 bucks for.

If they won't fix one of mine, when the others go I don't know what I'm going to use.

    Dave,

Just had two buy two for customers on this trip to balt. Talk about sticker shock, the 3x6=9 is now over 200 bucks. I remember buying mine for 135.00 several years ago. I had to call back home to make sure they wanted to spend it, actually they passed. They have a solid 10x lens for 112.00, they chose that one instead. Its nice, but I like the 3x6 I have.

I've been using triplet 10x magnifiers- the ones jewelers use to inspect the inner nuances of diamonds and precious stones. It took a little time to get used to,
but it's helped me spot every little detail that I need to see (and some that I don't need to see- lol) on a coin.
This may sound like a dumb question, but what's so special about the Eschenbach? Why the $200 price tag?

I've used the Eschenbach 5x for almost 30 years. Why? Sufficient for micro work, and a a broad(er) field of vision for the coin as a whole. The gestalt, if you will. I'm farsighted and have always needed a loupe, but can still tell eye-appeal in-hand, which is all I want or need because the loupe is always needed for what passes the first test. For this partially-blind etc.

As usual, YMMV. I may make that my 2014 sig-lineimage

Thanks, that's the kind of answer I was looking for. The 10x loupe I have is pretty accurate, but the lenses aren't wide enough to see the entire coin (as a whole) at 10x.
Maybe I'll look at one sometime in the future. For now, I think my money should for now be put toward a really strong camera so I can start showing close-ups to the forums. That's another conversation for another day, I suppose...

Thank you for this thread, Dave.

I didn't realize how different the quality of loupes were and, for my birthday (today) this year, my wife was trying to figure out what to get me. I showed her the link on Amazon and she gave it to me this morning along with making me breakfast image

Wow! My previous (cheap, from ebay about 11 years ago) one was "ok", but the clarity of this one is really cool!

I didn't have her use the Ottofrei link as I think that would have encumbered her and caused more of a hassle and I wouldn't have gotten it image
The Amazon one cost just a Jackson more and it came, from Germany, in just over a week. Too late for me to have at last weekend's PNNA show, but I have it now image

I disagree. I used to have a cheap loupe, and I could see some things, but not a lot, and not that well. I borrowed an Eschenbach to do lot viewing at a FUN show and compare the high quality glass to what I had been using. The difference is night and day. My eyes are very good, but with a high quality loupe, I use it all the time when I see anything of interest/concern. With my old, junky loupe, I never would have even tried on most things, as I know I wouldn't have seen most of what piqued my interest. A good loupe, well used, will pay dividends.

I have them all ,tried them all, and in various powers Zeiss (3-6-9X), 8X, Eschenbachs (5X, 3-6-9X, 8X), Belomo 7X, Hasting triplets (7X,10X,14X), Bausch and Lomb (various plus 5x slide), Edmunds Scientific 3X, 5X (purposed for examining other lenses.Tthis is an excellent lens very high quality) and a few others from around the world.

I guess I am a collector of these too.

For me, the best multi is the Zeiss 3x6x9x , but here are a few others I enjoy using.

Belomo (Ukraine/Russian made) is nice quality loupe for the money. I have a 7 X and use it frequently.

Also found a very nice high quality large lens 21mm black framed (reduces glare) triplet 10X from an importer on ebay . Excellent lens. Bought some for friends.

The "Surplus Shed" has a 4 lens 50mm 5x that is a great loupe. Edmunds Scientific has a 5X purposed for examining other lenses. This is an excellent lens of very high quality also. I have bought many coins with it.

I always look for larger mm lenses that have flat in focused fields of view to the edges, black framed, they are easier on the eyes. All the above were purchased under $100. Most under $50.

    Krueger

  • Has anyone here switched from a Bausch & Lomb triplet to a Eschenbach? If so, is there much of a difference?

I got turned on to the Eschenbach 5x by ColonelJessup when he handed me his to look at one of his coins at a show.

I have a 3-6-9 *generic* that I used for years and found myself taking out other coins just to play with the new one.
The glass DOES make a difference....and, 10 years ago, heck, even 1 year ago, I told myself I would never pay over $30 for a glass.....at ~$120, this one is nice and worth it....if you look closely at your coins image

You can blow away any handheld doublet or triplet magnifier with a cheap enlarging lens, but it will be fixed magnification. A 50mm lens like a Nikon f/2.8 is similar to a 6x loupe. A 75mm is like a 4x. 105mm is like a 3x. The best handheld loupes are typically triplets, but that's the worst enlarging lens. Many enlarging lenses are 4-element, and many more are 6-element. Once you try a Nikon 50/2.8 or 75/4 on coins, you will wonder why folks care at all about doublet and triplet loupes. Plus, you can pick up a Nikon 50/2.8 for less than $40. If you want to try it out to make sure I'm not FOS, buy a Voss or similar 50/3.5 for $10 and be shocked and amazed at the clarity and absolute lack of distortion, even when you don't hold the lens perfectly flat to the coin. In fact, hold it at 30-deg if you want!

I bought my Echenbacher 5x from Ira Goldberg back in 1999 for $40 when I lost my other one at the January 1999 FUN show.

It is the same one as pictured by Ikeigwin.

Agreed, it blows the other ones away.

In my prior post to this category I mentioned that two customers of mine who wanted me to get them one of the eschenbach magnifiers , decided to go with the single 10x lens rather than the 3x6 I have , due to the cost.

Update, they do not like it!! They both wish they had spent the extra money and got the 6x9 .

Having spent years using loupe magnifiers in my work as well as hobbies, I have tried many types. My standard is the Zeiss 3x6x9.... the quality of the glass is incredible and no edge distortion. Always had it on a lanyard around my neck at coin shows... and often at work. Cheers, RickO
