Honus Wagner PSA 5 MC Goldin Auction....

Honus Wagner

This card is getting all kinds of press. CNBC was covering this auction today and talking about the card which is nice to see.

The example that is being auctioned off I believe I heard sold for 1.6 million in 2008 or 2009 in the height of the financial crisis.

It will be very interesting to see what it brings this time.

I had a chance to read the description and this example sold for 1.62 million in 2008. The average number graded Wagner has appreciated 70% since then the article says.

There will be some major wallets fighting over this card.

I am anxious to see the final price.

  • I think it's safe to say the seller is going to be very pleased with the $$$ he makes off of this sale!
I have no collecting direction. I just buy stuff!

I saw this card on display at the Long Beach Coin & Card Expo with a few other ones. It's always nice to see in person.

Here is the picture I took of it:

Below is a picture of my son holding a Wagner at a show in Glendale, Ca last year. I still can't believe they let him hold it!

I read through a number of the pages. Pretty wild.

That video of him pimping the 1997 packs with 1.5 million inside was priceless. I used to watch this stuff late at night in the late 1990's.

I doubt his reputation will have any impact on the final selling price of the Wagner.

That's a cute photo. Did PSA give that card a special holder with black borders? It could be taped to the back of the case but appears to be black inside.

What are the highest non- PSA graded Wagners - from a reputable source?

<< <i>What are the highest non- PSA graded Wagners - from a reputable source? >>

Good question - here's a few - no necessarily "high" grades but non-PSA.

I'll give a "raw" one first:

    1998 - Christies - raw - AH graded Vg-Ex - sold for around 200K

    image

    2003 - an SGC 10 sells for 90K - Mastro - was in a PSA holder

    image

    2005 - GAI 3.5 - "Nagy" Wagner - sold for 450K - now in a SGC holder - Mastro Auctions

    image

    2008 - SGC 10 - 220K - Heritage Auctions

    image

    2001 - Raw - 86K - Piedmont 150 - Mastro Auctions

    image

    2009 - SGC 40 - Memory Lane - 900K

Cool picture of your son with the Wagner. How did you convince the owner of that card to let your son hold it?
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

It was encased in a special holder, but it wasn't from PSA.

Memory Lane had the card on display when they offered to let my son hold it. I was a little freaked out that he might drop it...it's like holding the equivalent of a house in price!

The final 2 days are going to be fun to watch.

Another strong bid came in and the current bid is $1,471,796.00 plus the buyers premium of 10%. Actual bid is $1,618,975.80.

Nice. Now it is firmly at a higher price then the last sale of this card.

Once again not one Wagner is selling for less then the prior sale of the same card. AWESOME!!!

    Conspicuous consumption.

<< <i>The 'MC' notation in the grade reflects the card’s ample borders which are 1/16 of an inch larger than standard T206 size. Housed within these borders is arguably a Near Mint Honus Wagner image bursting with color and quite frankly the finest Wagner that may be available for purchase in the foreseeable future. >>

    Really?
    Good for you.

When I first read the headline on CNN this morning I had assumed they were talking about the PSA 8 Wagner. I can't believe all of this press for a PSA 5 (MC). So this is the equivalent of a PSA 3. I'm surprised it's selling for so much. Still, a beautiful card!

Haaaa, yeah they're basically telling you that this card could be trimmed in the future. Jerks...

So, someone with a paper cutter could trim up this card and make a LOT of money? I wonder if anyone has ever tried that before
  • ABellPharmDABellPharmD Posts: 181 ✭✭✭
This card may hold more value as a MC 5 compared to a straight 5. The bottom right corner of the card show the top right border of the card below it on the sheet it was cut from. This makes it a freak and can actually increase its value significantly in T206 circles. With all of the negative press around the Gretzky 8, this card will probably come close to surpassing it when this auction closes. it's a beautiful card.
    I collect Cal Ripken cards, T206, E95, E210, R319.

Close but not true. If you added the word "public" prior sale it would be true. This same card sold privately for less last time it sold than the previous time it sold. But as far as I am aware no Wags has publicly sold for less than it did the time before.

I may be way off base on this, but I thought the card was cut from a sheet and trimmed to proper size and that was known by PSA before grading. They made an exception for this card, as they do for other very rare items.

Is it possible the added recognition could raise the value?

I would think that the 2nd highest graded Wagner, I beleive is the one known as "Jumbo" could now boast being the best and it's value could really rise?

It appears I may have been correct back in November of 2012 during a discussion in one of our threads regarding the price that "Jumbo" would be affected by the controversy of the PSA 8 Wagner!

Just my opinion, but when you have such a card as this and knowing its rarity and such, you can basically throw out that it is a 5MC = 3 equation. For this particular card it is graded a 5 that just so happens to be miscut.

The fact that it looks soooo much better/cleaner then what a 3 would grade, and the fact it is much better looking then what the known PSA 2's look like it may fetch about $3M.

    Later, Paul.

    Ebay
    PSA 5MC
    $0.00
BIN 2,500,000 - Did not sell
    15385994

Based on the fact that it didn't sell with the 2.5 BIN - some money was left on the table. Wonder if the seller is disappointed?

Is it possible there wasn't even a real person who "won"? "Anonymous bidders" always make me wonder.

And, it could simply be a cheap bit of promotion for a "new" auction house, right? "Highest price garnered yet!! Look at us!!"
