I remember it was the hottest product out there. I remember around $450/box. May have been 24 boxes to the case. Everything was on fire back then. Ultra. Leaf baseball. Pistons team card. Pro Set Santa Claus. Really. Crazy times.
Upper Deck football was the same way except not quite as crazy as the French invasion..... to be honest though, you could not go wrong with the rookies in this set....it was loaded......but way too much of it produced.
Yes, these were WHITE HOT back then. At the same time, '90-91 OPC Premier hockey was like liquid gold too. I can remember being at shows and the prices for packs were literally rising by the hour at tables. AMAZING. My how times change huh?
Funny you'd ask....I have a story.....an acquaintance of mine, a prominent dentist in the area, purchased two full cases of these directly from UD......cheap buy in of course. Then when they began skyrocketing, he was offered $17,000.00 per case at one time - passed on that (the greedy SOB ) and saw his stack of gold bars dwindle to something more like a handful of copper coins! OUCH!!!! He still has them as a reminder that "WTF was I thinking??!" I know I've been there, mine was with 1990 Leaf Baseball (bought three cases at Costco of all places) - held on much too long! Oh well....
collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

Wow. From 17k per case to 15 bucks per box. That is really amazing.
I remember a local Costco selling out of them in hours @ $700/box. A friend of mine bought two boxes and asked if I wanted one. Luckily I had talked to a long time collector who said don't buy them. His exact words were "who cares if they're French". I never regretted listening to him.
1990 was a wild year for the hobby. Somebody should do a documentary on it.
I remember basketball was exploding. Does anyone want a 1990 Skybox Danny Ferry rookie, lol? Those were like $5. The 89 Upper Deck Dale Murphy reverse negative was $200.
1990/91 French Hockey....that was a combination of upper deck very hot. People thought 1990 would be as hot as 89. Plus it was hockey. Plus they were "rookies".
Beckett in 1990 to a 13 year old collector was literally attached to his hip. Quoted and drooled over. I think I bought a few packs at $20 each. Never pulled a Federov, lol.
I remember that year. Also had 1990 Leaf which was going for crazy prices. The hockey cards were crazy. On the Score side, the French version of Eric Lindros was a $20 card at least. I think they are $2 at best right now.
I heard this story from a dealer who got out of cards in the early 1990s and was telling someone else about how someone tipped him off to the reprinting and told him to dump the stuff. I then read the same story in Card Sharks and wondered how quickly that scam would have been discovered in the Internet era.
I was a hockey fan for six months after having never watched a game in my life.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy! Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
