Results of a 1979 Topps Vending Box Break

Has anyone else picked up one of these from BBCE and opened it? I am curious as to everyone else's results. There were just no star cards

No Ryan, Schmidt, Reggie, Brett, Dawson, Rose, Molitor, Seaver, Carew, Carlton, Brock,

1 Horribly off cut Ozzie. It would grade MC
1 Horribly Miscut Eddie Murray MC
1 Yount that might grade a 7

That's about it

A lot of the commons were actually nicely centered, so it's a shame I didn't get more stars

Sorry about your poor luck on that box. That's the risk of dropping $250 on 1970s stuff. For that kind of money, you could buy a ton of 1980s or early 1990s boxes with lots of future HOF rookies, stars and cool inserts.
  • Bought two '79 vending boxes from BBCE about six years ago. Appeared one had been dropped, as all upper-left corners had been dinged. Remarkably, I was given a $100 credit. Class act. Seeemed to have a fair amount of star cards. Drew two Ozzies, both horribly OC.

Thanks for posting your results. Sorry you didn't do that well. I purchased one of these vending boxes and plan on keeping it sealed. I will say that the box I received looks to be case fresh, even though the packaging does not suggest that.

    << <i>How were the corners? >>

That's the sad part. The overall condition of the cards were really good....corners and centering. I kept thinking if I pull an Ozzie I have a good hot and lo and behold, it's terrible (95-5 L-R).

I have pulled out the majority of commons that I feel are good and will have a look at the Pop Report to see if anything is worth sending in

This is why I think people are dingy, paying what is now $400+ for 1978 Topps baseball vending boxes on ebay. I do believe the seller(eritter) is selling legit boxes, but if we have BBCE selling the 1979 boxes at $250, I think its reasonable that if Steve Hart found a legit source for 1978 vending boxes, it would be for sale at BBCE in the $350 ish range.

And I think thats even a ridiculous risk considering what late 70's product looks like in general, let alone from a vending box rather than rack packs.

Thank you for posting your break Clockwork Angel. Sorry it did not go well for you. But at least this is a warning to the guys(probably from this site) who are choosing to drop four benjamins on this sort of product.
  • I was going to pick one of those 79 vending boxes up today then saw this thread. Obviously psa 9's or 10s from late 70s boxes is hard enough as it is, but even one low pop 9 or 10 of a common would pay for the box right? It doesn't matter anyway, I would not open the box for a long time, which seems to be the only reason to buy it at the moment.
I collect vintage PSA graded SF Giants, Willie Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal and Perry. And modern players like Buster Posey, Will Clark and Barry Bonds.

PSA 10 Dale Murphy from '79 will bring $1500+ as well. There are about 4-5 people who need it for their basic set, including some of the free wheeling big spenders. The last one I know to trade hands privately went for over $3k.
Successful transactions with: thedutymon, tsalems1, davidpuddy, probstein123, lodibrewfan, gododgersfan, dialj, jwgators, copperjj, larryp, hookem, boopotts, crimsontider, rogermnj, swartz1, Counselor

Always buying Bobby Cox inserts. PM me.
