1951 Mickey Mantle Bowman Purchase

Hi! Though I primarily frequent the coin forum and this is my first stop in the sports card area. I've also been a sports card collector since childhood, and am recently revisiting this area. I have always dreamed about getting Mantle's rookie as a youngster....and I finally made a move. I was heavily debating the 52 mantle, but just could not justify the cost of paying that much for a card that was not his rookie....although I know that one is the holy grail. I know Beckett is not as respected as PSA for grading, and probably would not cross at this grade.....but do you think it could make a PSA 4?

Hi Johnny. Nice Mantle. I am not much of a grading expert when it comes to high grade cards but I do pretty well estimating mid or lower grade cards. Looks accurately graded to me.

    Hiya Johnny

    Congratulations on your pickup!

Ya gotta love his RC. I think the grade is fair. Over-graded? Don't think so. Someone who's better than I may differ.

Would be proud to have your card. BTW - you could always send it into PSA for a review and see if they'll put it in a holder with the same grade?

    Again - very nice card.

Love it! Fits the grade no matter what holder it was in. Enjoy the card!

Congrats, nice eye appeal for the grade!
  • Thanks everyone! Good to know this is right for the grade. I am familar with coin grading, but not so much on card grading. This mantle has really vibrant colors and no creasing or staining...just a bit of cornerwear and is a bit off-center left to right(though I see that is common for these 1951 bowman cards). This card completely dwarfs anything I had in my childhood vintage collection. I may attempt a PSA crossover if I decide to sell, but not anytime soon. It is fun to finally own one of my childhood fantasy cards as an adult.

Worst case scenario, it's a 4. Still might be worth more as a PSA 4 than a Beckett 4.5, close call.
Work hard and you will succeed!!

Great card. Big splash getting back into cards, with that one ! Congratulations. Like said above, I'm no expert on grading either but it looks like a 4 to me, but enjoy it regardless of the grade. One of the most iconic cards ever.

I remember as a kid seeing the 1935 National Chicle Nagurski and being blown away by how unique looking, old, and valuable it was. I wanted one, but thought I would never be able to afford it. I finally picked one up a few years back and still can't believe I own it every time I have it in my hands. image

Congrats on owning your childhood dream card... regardless of any holder, grade, or condition... you own The Mick's rookie card. image

Very nice Mantle. Agree with all of the above on looks good for the grade.

Completely off topic - nice pull on the 1916 dateless quarters

I would think the Mantle would grade a PSA 4 if you were to cross it. Very nice card you have there.

Congrats. That is a very nice looking mid grade Mantle rookie. I would cross over the card at a show if possible.

What advantages are there by crossing at a show Danny?

Hi Doug. No postage both ways on a $3000 card and it would be done timely.

Ahhh, gotcha. I should have known better. I thought the lighting was worse at shows and you could better grades there. image
  • Hi everyone. I am very close to doing a blockbuster trade (for me), a one for one swap between a 1951 Bowman Mantle (SGC 4.5) and a 1933 Sport Kings Ruth (PSA 5). I am trading for the Mantle, so I though I would cruise the forums for some misc. info. Lo and behold, seems the Mantle pictured at the top of this thread is the same card as the one I'm trading for. Interestingly, there were posts about crossing to PSA. It appears to have been successfully crossed to SGC. Questions: Do you think these Mantles are actually the same card? Do you think this is a fair trade, or does it favor one side? Thanks everyone for your input.

    Crossed over Mantle?

    Yep.

They're the same card. Top border to the right has the same dent in both.

I don't know their respective values but I'd much rather have the Ruth card myself.

Great card. Not sure that would cross to PSA 4.

I'd say its a straight up trade $ wise.
