South Africa 1952 Proof Set

With 12,000 South African 1052 proof sets minted they are not hard to find. However, they are usually toned or hairlined. I was lucky enough to be able to pick through a small horde of these recently and this one set leapt out because of it's originality. It's now sitting happily in my collection.

That penny's a screamer, and you can practically see the cartwheels rolling. image

The rest of the bronze is also really nice, let alone the silver.

PS- oh, that 5s piece... wow.

Great photos, too. That makes a big difference.

Yes, the penny is a screamer. I have one other full set of this year and a number of singles but the penny in this set is the by far the most original of the type that I've seen. That being said when the bronze tones it can go the most amazing purple color!

    Beautiful set of coins.

The South African Mint was selling 1951 proof sets in 1963, if I had had the money then,
I would have bought one (I was 15 at the time).

Yeah, I've seen that purpley look, and it can be a sight to behold, if there are nice mirrors beneath.

I had a 1937 UK George VI coronation proof set, once- the one with ... uh... what was it- 15 coins? And my bronze in that set had the purples.

'Twas a sight to behold, that set was. Alas, I had it in my pre-Internet, pre-photography days. Swapped it for two 1877 USA Indian cents, believe it or not. This back when the Brit set cataloged for less than a hundred bucks. (The IHC were an AG/G and a G/VG with machine damage).

OP, I know what you mean about the hairlines and toning. You'd think for a country that has one of the world's largest and most-profitable gold mines they could afford a better minting process (did they even mint themselves? or subcontract?).

I felt a surge in South Africa types a couple years ago, are they still selling well?

  • An excellent set; if graded, it would probably bring 2K! Lochness: Union proof sets (1947-1960) are HOT!!! My last sets on ebay (1956 and 1955) brought 2.5K and 3K. I have been selling SAF coins for 4 years now, and I am stunned by some of the prices. There is a growing international collector base for these.

Wowzer is all I can say. That set would look better in my collection than yours though.

There were actually quite a lot of members that bought/sold/trade and of course graded these sets. The bronze ones and the two biggest silver denominations seemed to bring more than double the price f the set, including grading fees. Different times of course, because they were selling for a song back then. The key word is to buy it in person, and not sight unseen, or from some fuzzy pictures on eBay. Greg must still have a source, or has hoarded them at some point, as I often see these coins among his items.

The penny is magnificent, as all the bronze, but my personal favorite is the farthing. Let us know if you decide to break it up. image

I don't really follow the market for these and just accumulate better coins as I find them. This set was actually a gift (after I'd picked out the one I wanted from a horde) so it won't be getting broken up.

I have seen many of these on eBay but not sold as complete sets. They are listed weekly but as individual slabbed pieces. Anyway, I was under the impression the fad had begun fading as I have not seen the same prices in recent months as two years ago.

I know the low mintages have been one of the factors in their rise. I hope it does continue, because I have a couple top pops to sell when the time is right.
