I wonder if the launch is partly driving BGS 10 selling prices. I've been keeping a grid of recent sales from the 1980s and they are regularly bringing in 10-25x money over PSA 10s if low population (10 or less). Not sure which way that will trend but it's fun to watch.
<< <i>What benefits or advantages does creating a registry offer? Why does it exist? >>
I know that there are some set collectors out there that are buying the cards to complete a set but don't use the registry. In this case, they are just referencing the registry to see what cards are tied up in collections.
<< <i> Well the good thing is that beckett doesn't charge you a yearly fee to submit cards to them >>
Neither does PSA. You don't have to pay a yearly fee to submit cards.
You do have to buy a collectors club membership to get the collectors club special rates, much like Beckett runs occasional promotions where you pay them $$$ to get special rates and priviledges.
<< <i>When it comes to a Beckett Grading Registry why bother as long as this is how they graded there cards.
9.5 + 9.5 + 9 Corners + 9.5 = 9.5 GEM MINT
This is how I see it.
9.5 + 9.5 + 9 Corners + 9.5 = PSA 9 Mint
Looking forward to putting together a Frank Thomas Master Set GEM MINT 9.5 with dinged corners.

So you think that PSA 10's are Gem in every subgrade? ...I think there's something to say about grading 'transparency' by using subgrades. I think this will be a big deal especially to the modern crowd.
Digi- I don't think anyone does a registry for a few free grades which are really just meant to keep the submitter grading... I got 3 for my last set under 750 cards at 90%.
<< <i>So you think that PSA 10's are Gem in every subgrade? >>
NO
But my feelings are when it comes to corners and edges if there is any issues other than rough cuts like soft corners and chipping Etc. and are graded by any grading company the card shouldn't grade higher than MINT period.

<< <i>I think PSA has a running head start on this. >>
Haha. That's an understatement. Anyone know how long the PSA registry has been around? Was it available from the beginning?
<< <i>What benefits or advantages does creating a registry offer? Why does it exist? >>
$$$! Why else would people spend $6 to grade a $.05 card.

Competitive bragging rights as you compete against other collectors over percentage or GPA, or simply showcasing your collection.
Some use stuff like that for inventory management.
With PSA at least, you'll get a few free grading vouchers when you get a high enough completion percentage.

In defense of PSA, the yearly fee (which I am not a fan of) does get a voucher for free grades and a neat book to put on the coffee table.
