1979 Topps Vending Box
So clearly this box has been searched. The pattern of cards doesn't at all look like any Topps vending box should. I pm seller this morning and inform that it's a searched box(the listing says unsearched) and I link another auction that shows a correct unsearched vending box pattern.
No response so far, but now some sizable bids for what amounts to a box of 500 commons w/no pics.
I find it odd that two guys with heavy eBay experience would bid $50 + on a box of searched 1979 Topps.

<< <i>Yeah, I'm no vending expert, but I've never seen vending like that. Everyone I've seen has 'stripes'...

That's the exact link I sent the seller.
Also just noticed the ridicubad $20 shipping
I'm guessing seller failed his college ethics course. I wonder if the bidders are really this clueless or just friends & family.
"However, return of this item is iffy because there is no way I can tell what happened to the cards once they leave me. If some other unforeseen happening occurs perhaps something can be worked out."
I'd like to buy the lot , then tell the seller this-- somehow, that box was searched through, because every single card in there was not a star, but most cards were ones that the owner knew would fetch mega-bucks once graded, and there were even some printing errors that are not highly publicized, so whoever set that box up, knew what they were doing.
And then tell him that I feel I took advantage of him by taking the chance that the box was not messed with, and that normaly, I would split up the profits with him, but in this case, I have struck the lottery so richly that I am giving this mega windfall to needy organizations. Cause they need it more than I do.

<< <i>I've always found the opened vending box photo to be a double-edged sword. While it's clearly good to see the pattern as it lends evidence to the authenticity of the box, it also guarantees that the box has been opened at least once. Everytime it's opened there's a risk of damaging the corners of every single card in the box.
Even if vending has never been opened there is a decent chance that corners are dinged ... so every opening just adds to the likelihood IMO. >>
I agree with this but as a bidder on ebay, you really have no other way to verify its unsearched. Normally I'd advocate buying from a reputable source, but the discount on ebay can be as drastic as 50% on vending boxes.
In this particular auction, the damage on some cards is very visable and actually drastic in the situation of some cards in that box. And that makes the current bidding even more odd. Along came the zero feedback dude and the 948 feedback guy starts going toe to toe with him.
The seller doesn't really seem to care about what I messaged him about so I assume the sellers just fine with any bidding shadiness.
<< <i>I purchased this box and two others from a dealer in Massachusetts in the 1980s. The two others have had several cards removed for inspection, but I have never searched this box. I see that the photo of the box in your auction looks tighter on the back side than the one in mine. The lid has been opened on my box but as I said I've never removed cards from it.- pjr14 >>
