VCP help? 1975 Mini Nolan Ryan

Can someone give me the VCP #s for 1975 Topps Nolan Ryan Mini for PSA 8 and PSA 9? I have a PSA 8.5 that I am considering auctioning. Also, anyone have any idea of what it would go for? I'm sure the difference between and 8 and a 9 is huge.

  • Hey Daniel,

    Here you go:

    PSA 8 - Average Price: $114.80

    PSA 9 - Average Price: $1,365.45

HUGE pretty much sums it up.

    Cheers!

Thank you, Marc. Much appreciated. That is a huge difference. I guess I can always put the card up on eBay for like a $300 minimum and see if any takers.

edited to add: This is a problem with half grades. Hard to tell what the value is. People looking for 8s may not want to pay more for an 8.5 and people looking for 9s may not consider an 8.5.

your VCP avg. for 8.5 is over $370, however most recent sale per their site was last October for $450.

don't sell yourself short. if that card holds a strong eye appeal, $300 is too cheap.

goner - I didn't realize VCP showed half grades too. Thanks for the info. Here is a scan of the card.

  • That is a VERY strong 8.5! Should sell north of 600 IMO

  • I would crack that card to be honest...the diamond cut is very slight and I have seen many 9s with worse diamond cut than that. Also, the Ryan is very hard to find centered and without fisheyes...this is a nice card

What's my best way to sell this card to maximize the price? Consign with someone like PWCC? Just list on eBay?

    That's a beautiful Ryan mini 500.

This board has been the source of a few of the rare, solid PSA 9s and 8.5s of this card.

Just wanted to chime in and say that while I'm likely in the minority, I'm not afraid as a buyer to pay 9 money for an 8.5 that is extremely nice. I think the introduction of the half-point complicated things greatly...I see a lot of old 9's that should be 8.5's (and a lot of old 8's that should be 7.5's). Hopefully, you get some guys bidding on the 9 attributes (rather than the reason the card is in the 8.5 holder in the first place).

I can't comment as to your card specifically, but that is my personal view as a buyer of high-end, vintage cards.

From the looks of that card to my untrained eye, I wouldn't sell yourself short, as it looks pretty nice to me.

Sweet card, Daniel! I remember when you first posted it raw and I think I even guessed then it would grade 8.5. I don't think it will bump to a 9, but it's a very sharp card in any case!

i dont think it will bump, though the shame of it is that if it were vincente romo, it might. One of the 20 or so nicest ryan minis out there.

    Mini and Tim,
What do you think is holding this card back?

    Thanks,

L/R centering and a slight tilt, which is most noticeable when you compare bottom left and right borders.

Like Jim, I also think that PSA is somewhat conservative when it comes to assigning a Mint 9 grade to a key card like this one, and I stand by my original assessment of this card as an 8.5 which is also what I thought it would grade when I first saw it raw.

Edit to add: I do think it's worth attempting a bump on review, but I would not crack it out to do so.

  • I would not crack it. I would consider sending it in for a review, try for a 9.

I may take Dave's and Tim's advice and submit for review, with a few other cards. I definitely won't crack it out though - too much could go wrong.

That is a beautiful Ryan, and when I first saw the scan, I'm like, WOW. However, the L/R centering keeps it from a 9 IMO. Awesome card though!
