According to Chumley's rules on authentication, you have to make sure the metal is genuine before you make an offer. You can't be throwing a dollar down on everything that comes into the shop.

Wouldn't there be some charring or blackening around the holes?

I'm of the opinion it's acid since a hot stove, if it was even possible to concentrate the heat in one area, would have left smooth melted edges. Discoloration of the surrounding metal would not have been avoidable as well.
