Why Coin Dealers Drink part CCCXCVIII

nencoinnencoin Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭✭
After a few back and forth email exchanges with a person who had currency and coins to sell, they then proceeded to give us their terms. Here they are, for your amusement:

I would like to have cash- no reporting it to irs that way- you may come pick it all up with the cash- will accept $90,000.00 for all the coins and $75,000.00 cash for all the paper money- that is about 8% of it's total value so that if you are a dealer you can have the rest of them graded and still make a hell of a profit, or I will ship the entire safe- enclosed in plywood to you with an initial bank wired transfer of at least $100,000.00 of the total then when you get the items you pay the balance due and I will give you the 8 digit combination to open the safe- no-one will know what it is except that it is heavy as hell- about 400 pounds of coins and paper money- there is also another box i found with more coins and paper money that is not listed that will go with the sale- sorry but no I will not allow anyone to go thru the items cherrypicking- it;s all of either the coins-the paper or both/or none of either at all. now if you are interested that is what I want- the extra box of items will add about $9,000.00 to the total list- you may come- send employee for pickup- or call with setup of bank transfer- wish there was a holding company that could hold the initial payment until shipped- release it then release the balance once you have the stuff in hand- maybe you have dealt with some company like that?? let me know---xxx-xxx-xxxx 10am-11pm est.

The person then followed up that email with this one here, which we noticed was sent to a dozen or so other dealers:

ok folks it is time to make up your mind and quit the bulls%#@ting around- eith you want to buy the items or you do not- stop wasting my time so i can get on with my other stuff that needs to be done-now we have played your games for over a month- I have bills that need to be paid and do not need to keep playing your little games - so if you want to buy fine-if not let me know and I will get on with another method of sales such as ebay or coin auction/ you have told me one lie after another that you were going to send payments- pay thru paypal- send bank checks and so on- so far it has all been lies-now I run a business and do not have time for this- if you are coming say so and do so- if you are buying say so and do so- I will do it a cheaper way since it is showing that neither of you have the money you say you have to buy with- I will allow you to make 1 payment of 1200.00 to paypal-list your shipping information-I will ship you 25 bills or 25 coins for you to price -you then make an offer for them all- if I accept you pay the balance to paypal- if I do not you return my items and I refund your money-but I will not ship any items without some payment in advance-sorry I have been very stupid in life but I am not doing that- Now today you make up your mind-call me on the phone at xxx-xxx-xxxx and tell me yes you want the items- yes you are paying paypal now- yes you agree to take 25 pcs. at a time for review-yes you will pay the balance of all offers within 3 days of receiving the items-yes you are ready to do business.Pay me today I will ship on monday- items will be to you likely by Wednesday and we can complete sale number 1 in this week- unless you are coming here to buy at one lumpsum. Now you have all had ample time to look the lists over- so you know some are graded and some are not, that has been said upfront and that is why we are asking the low amount for the sale- so you as a buyer may have them graded and still make about a 75% profit on your investment.

Seller emails read as if they were written by someone on a 96 hour cocaine binge. Crazy.
  • Forward it to the IRS.

Having dealt with people like that in the past from time to time, I would guess that if it exists at all that the safe has "golden dollars", circ. Ikes and $2 bills from the 1970's.

For a guy who is super-paranoid about being shortchanged or ripped off, he sure is leaving a lot of "profit" on the table. An interesting combination of paranoid greediness and (he says) extreme generosity.

I think hunting for Bigfoot would have a much higher probability of success than doing a deal with this person.

Sounds about right. Especially his comment that those 5-6 figure sums are about 8% of the value of his collection. I suppose if his math is (price paid on the shopping network) * (rate inflation) * (# of years ago purchases were made) maybe his calculations are correct image

Yeah, sure...I'm going to take $100k to a warehouse(or shed or whatever) somewhere and inspect the merchandise then hand over the cash and drive away with a 400# safe. Oh, and he won't give me any ID so there's no problem with the IRS. I wouldn't do it with your money...maybe with your money and a SWAT team. image
