My first YouTube dig video

lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,795 ✭✭✭✭✭
From a year ago, to the week. Maybe I should get out and do another, now that I have a headmounted videocam.

Here is a detecting REALITY show in 20 targets.

Fuhgeddabout the so-called "reality" shows on TV, which are scripted and mostly fake.

Note to self-appointed forum topicality cops: there's nothing but US coins included in the finds, so I'm legal in posting it here. Nyah nyah.

PS- Watch the trailer first, if you like.

Funny how more people watched that than the actual movie. (90-some page hits on the trailer, only 60-ish on the movie.)

Can just imagine some kiddo losing that dime back in the late 1940s or early 1950s and being upset about losing it. I still remember losing a silver dollar in the sand at a beach when I was about 7 years old and wondering when someone found it with a detector.

    Nicely done!

    I like it a lot!
I was expecting to see you run around in circles screaming, climb a tree howling or hurl yourself face first into a muddy ditch if you found something cool...

Back in the day (not to sound like the Old Man of Pawn Stars) but that dime would have bought a half a white bag of penny candy.

Note: I did miss at least a section where you could have hovered over a target so we could have heard the signal....other than that, nice job.

Very nice for a first video. Maybe a little long in the seperation delays. You got more guts than I putting yourself out there. You have a nice funny spin on things. Bet you were looking for a nice piece of Dahlonega gold. I enjoyed it. Maybe you could do another one on searching for Megalodon pieces.

Nice vid. And what's cool is that given the area where you were hunting, that silver dime signal could potentially have been a Dahlonega $2 1/2! Hope springs eternal.

I believe I still have my old junky no-frills Radio Shack metal detector from 40+ years ago somewhere in storage; I wonder if it still works. It drove me nuts finding pulltabs back in the day. The best thing I found was an 1883 Seated Lib dime out of a freshly turned over pile of dirt at a construction site at a local park.

The first thing I ever found with it was alongside my folks' driveway, right after I'd gotten it as a birthday present- a HUGE signal... I had visions of gold, platinum, silver....

...it was an empty tube of permatex gasket sealer. image

So how did that work with the owners of the property? Did you offer them a split of what you found or were they OK with you poking around since there was no lawn to disturb?

<< <i>Was that a typical day of treasure hunting? >>

Pretty much, if you consider the fact that I do NOT get silvered on every outing. The trash part was very typical. Usually I do find at least one interesting keeper item (a relic or gee-whiz curiosity item) in a twenty-target span like this.

<< <i>I was expecting to see you run around in circles screaming, climb a tree howling or hurl yourself face first into a muddy ditch if you found something cool... >>

I'll save that for the first gold coin. But silver- ANY silver- ALWAYS puts a big grin on my face. Even though this was one of a great many Mercs I've dug, and perhaps the fifth 1944 Merc, diggin' 'em never gets old.

<< <i>Note: I did miss at least a section where you could have hovered over a target so we could have heard the signal....other than that, nice job. >>

I was shooting all of that with my wife's point-and-shoot camera, which has the ability to shoot 2-minute video clips. To do actual live video of me getting the signal, I'd need a headmounted video camera, which I now have (but haven't tried yet). It's kind of difficult- if not impossible- to shoot live video clips with a handheld camera while swinging a detector and carrying a digging tool in the other hand!

<< <i>So how did that work with the owners of the property? Did you offer them a split of what you found or were they OK with you poking around since there was no lawn to disturb? >>

This particular guy was fine with it. I had brought along some freebie gift coins as an icebreaker, but he refused them outright, saying he collects old houses, not coins. Told me to go right ahead and detect.

I actually might do a fossil hunt for the next video, just to familiarize myself with the new camera. That way I'm not fiddling with a detector and digger AND new camera. This was pretty much a first attempt at dig video making, so bearing that in mind, I think it turned out pretty well. Some folks reported issues with the audio, and I botched the target numbering in one place. But not too bad for a first attempt, I think.

<< <i>Now that I know the area around your hometown,

Please do. My buddies seem to find them all the time, including those nearly pristine 1798 Draped Bust cents that seem to pop up every few months for them. I have only dug three large cents myself. (ND Draped Bust, 1837, 1850).

Boy howdy, if I had a nickel for every item like that I've found! As you can see from this video, it's more trash than cash that comes outta the ground on a typical dig. And I was being more selective about my targets on that one! But hey- you got a Seated dime with your cheapo machine. That's impressive enough. It's only happened to me four times so far, and with more expensive equipment.
