Nolan Ryan Auto

Not much of an autograph collector but am always interested when people post their autograph photos. I was going through some old junk and came across this. When I was a kid, I sent Nolan Ryan a letter and he sent me back this. So presumably it is an Nolan Ryan autograph circa 1979.

I wonder if Nolan actually signed these things himnself.

Are you sure it's not printed on the photo?

Wow. Even in those less cynical times, Nolan Ryan would send fake autos back to kids who idolized him? Say it isn't so!

I think the auto is real and done by Ryan. I have an auto on the same post card that looks very very close to the auto pictured above. I have a JSA certificate authenticating it also.

I will try posting a scan in a little while.

Edited to add two photos with similar autos of Ryan that I believe to be real. Ryan's auto was much more labored in the 1970's. It became much smoother in the 1980's and 1990's.

I have a '70s Angels team signed ball with a similar signature. Unless it's a clubhouse signature that I'm not familiar with, I'd say it's good.

The autograph in the op looks good to me too. I've been collecting Nolan Ryan stuff since the 1970s, and I have a few autographs (including ones received in-person) that look just like it.

Thanks guys. I wouldn't even include a SASE when I was a kid. I can still remember the players that sent me back autos on their dime. Ryan, Musial, Frankie Crosetti...Very special.

I was told by a very good source that these (the Angel issued photos) were signed by a batboy or clubhouse attendant who is also somewhat of a collector and feels bad about having done these for Ryan back in the day. The batboy also did some of the team balls for Ryan and Alex Johnson.

That said, I've also seen these passed by PSA and JSA.

My source says these are not Ryan's signatures without a doubt for what it's worth.

This is why I don't collect autographs.

Nolan had/has at least 3 distinct sigs over time. We'd get these team photos occasionally back in the day at Anaheim Stadium and have the players sign them at pre-game. These look good IMO.
  • Can you post a photo of your Crosetti?

I unfortunately sold the Crosetti years ago - probably for beer money.

That sucks. I would have given you beer. The Heineken truck stops in front of my house every month image

I recall it was a very old-looking sepia-toned photo of Frankie. Probably got enough for a six-pack.
