Nat Geo's "Diggers" TV Show

Hey RS, I know you've been MTing for a long time (I started in 1966). Wanted to get your take on the show mentioned.

Personally, it pisses me off (jealous) that they are getting paid to do something that has forever been just a hobby to pass the time.
A recent episode had them at the ghost town (pop 200+) of Goldfield, NV not far from my Vegas home. The way they were tearing up the ground around the old general store (just rocks/dirt, but still...) stuck in my craw. Never see them give any air time to instructional MTing the right way.

<< <i>"Can I get your permission to MT your yard, sir?" >>

Yea, right!

"Get off my property before I retrieve my 12 guage or they'll be MTing for your bones!!!"

I guess a camera crew from National Geographic lets you get away with anything. image

Everything starts and everything stops at precisely the right time for precisely the right reason.

Those shows are all scripted and staged....not an iota of truth. I know people who have been on them and one who actually worked a reality show. All fake. Cheers, RickO

I was so disapointed image when I found out that these metal detecting shows weren't real. Just like when I found out that professional wrestling, Santa and the Easter Bunny wheren't real. Man what else is fakeimage besides the stuff from China.

I do agree with Spy88. It hacks me off the way they just tear everything up. If we did that in some of the parks we detect in we would be escorted out pronto.

I too had higher expectations for Nat Geo. That said... If I were running a for-profit business with the overhead of a cable TV film crew, host, etc. I would stage some interesting finds and grandiose digs.

Look at the dig scenes from movies like "Indiana Jones: Raiders" and such... real archeologists use tooth brushes and work small plotted grids. But it's not as exciting as a group of guys with spade shovels.

Did you see the one with the Savage (forget his first name-ex wrestler) guy and his family? The other night they dug a milk can that was mostly full of old pennies, but also had a silver dollar (1879-O I believe) - it was pretty beat up. And then wrapped in a cloth among the pennies they pulled a $20 gold piece, not just any, but a 1907 high relief. The picture of the coin they unwrapped and the one they took to have appraised looked like 2 entirely different coins. He always sets his price and the so called experts seem willing to pay whatever he asks- in this case $30k.

They pay because that is what the script writers tell them to do. Try that in any coin or pawn shop....Cheers, RickO
