Fun with fonts and clip art. image

Some of you will remember how I got all artsy-fartsy with the love token banner.

I'm no Spacemonkey or Phil Arnold with the graphics, but I'm having fun.

I was thinkin' about Spacemonkey after I posted this, so I put that old avatar back on. His daughter, Maddy Rae, drew it.

I liked it enough to find it icon-suitable. image

(Though with that red suit on, I do resemble Santa Claus a bit. Maybe that's who Maddy Rae really had in mind.)

I like it, and you can make it into a sign to hang outside your coin shop when you venture into business. Cheers, RickO

I like it a lot but I don't think you really need the 2 periods?

As they busy it up in a non balanced way and you are more or less just making a statement with your signage.

Think I'll stick to the hotel biz to earn my living, but thanks, ricko. I've stepped back into mostly collector status, except for a little vest pocket dealing.

Now that you mention it, though, I could do something like this for the sign that hangs over my tiny antique mall booth.

Excellent point, but actually, I was deliberately mimicking 19th century punctuation styles. Look at enough old books and newspapers and you'll deduce that they were very "period-happy" in their punctuation then, so I did that for an "authentic" feel of the period (no pun intended).

No, I do not need the two periods, and you're right, they do busy it up. But the 19th century was a very busy, fussy, over-ornamented period (there's that word again). I could have gone with an early 19th century motif, with those funky lowercase s's that look like f's, but that's really more of an 18th century convention and there were no f's in the banner anyway.

You're right that the version you did was more symmetrical and balanced looking, and in fact it resembles my first draft.

But I think I'll stick with the periods in there. Unless everybody hates 'em.

PS- minutiae like that is no doubt how we ended up with so many different 19th century type coins in the first place, isn't it? image
"Say, Mr. Gobrecht, sir, we do like the coin designs, but Lady Liberty looks rather forlorn on her rock, with nothing to surround her. Perhaps if we added a circle of STARS to go around her?"
Gobrecht, secretly thinking like a 21st century modernist, frets about their cluttering up his nice original design. But it is done anyway.

Some years later, they add drapery, then some arrows to the date, then rays around the eagle on the reverse of the quarters and halves.

Then a year later the rays are gone, and a couple years after that the arrows drop off, too. But then they return again in 1873.

Fast forward more than a century in time, and people are still discussing the inclusion or omission of those little stars and arrows.
