Mailbox Horrors - A Collector's Worst Nightmare

I won several auctions over the weekend and thus was excited to get home to see what had arrived. Not sure what its like around the rest of the country but today in Chicago it is pretty nasty. There's an inch of "slush" everywhere so its like walking through water basically.

Well, I open my mailbox in my apartment building and see lots of bubble mailers but.....they are all soaked. Not a little wet. Soaked through, dripping water. To make matter worse there is a large bubble mailer that should not fit into my mailbox but it is shoved in there. Its one of those crappy recycled material mailers so it has turned into a wet mass off recycled dryer lint. There was also a flat-rate box for me not in my mailbox. Also soaked.

Fearing the worst I immediately ripped open the packages to see if anything could be spared. Miraculously, not a single card had been damaged by water. The only damage was from the large mailer that was shoved into the box. It was only an $8 item but it was bent in half.

This is really the first problem I've had with the mail here so I'm hoping this is just a one time thing.

Wow. That's crazy. We have it good here in SoCal. Not to hijack your thread, but to share a similar experience from today, I received a relatively expensive ($175) sports-related poster in the mail today via USPS. It's wide - almost 40 inches, and came in a cardboard shipping box. Apparently too wide, as the post office decided to fold the box into thirds. Really. Not good.

A few years ago I came home to this... it was full of about $300 in slabbed Ripken cards. EVERY other time the mail carrier walks it up to my porch, so this kind of bothered me that anyone could have simply pulled up and snatched it.

Jeff, there is a row of about 20 boxes like your's all side by side touching, that service a private road in the next town over. If you go by there after about 3 o'clock you can have your choice of USPS, Fedex, or UPS boxes. I can't believe they haven't done anything about it, it's been that way at least 10 years, and the entrance to their private street is right on a pretty busy 2 lane street. I just shake my head everytime I drive by there.

    NICE!!
I think most of those bubble mailers, though on the outside are like paper. But the inner layer is platic. Making them like a zip lock bag in a way. Glad none were damaged!!

THis i dont get. Why fold or damage any product you are SH. Directed at the post office!. I would think they should try and sh in the same condition you gave it to them in just to be safe. That should be a top 5 rule for delivering product. Very poor!!

No, my deliveries from PSA require a signature (I hate going to the PO to sign for packages, but it's better than the alternative). This particular package was from part of a Ripken collection I purchased from someone.
