1922 no-mint Penny = fake?
Hey all,
After stopping by the CU last week and being asked a couple (coin-board) questions, it actually prompted me to pull-out a few items/coins and have a look! (It’s been a while.
)
On this penny board I noticed the “1922 (None Reported)” slot was filled. After looking it up and seeing the possible value I got a little excited, but a closer look quickly revealed an odd spot where the mint-mark should be – sure looks suspicious to me.

Looks like the mint mark was ground-off, right?

an altered 1914-d (from a 44-d) that I had overlooked as a kid. Posted it here several years ago.

I disagree. The date looks fine, the mintmark was altered and ground off.

This is more likely, IMO.

Correct. Removed mint mark, not altered date.

Yes. You can see the divots that were left behind by the process, as well.

Ikeigwin – I don’t think I have a pic of the reverse (at least not up on PB.)
LL – yes, I think the “best” one is possibly the 1909S? I have shots of that one...

Looks like the "VDB" was scraped off!................
......I collect old stuff......
<< <i>I'm with the, "removed mintmark" grouping and not the altered date category. >>
Yup. The tooling is very evident in your pic. There are 1922 removed D cents out there that are virtually undetectable. Fortunately there are die markers for this coin that facilitate its authentication.

thats what it looks like to me as well.

Yeah – I don’t know what’s up with some of these coins?? (I sure hope someone didn’t scrape-off the ”VDB” on that 1909S!
I saw something else VERY odd last night with a older large cent (I think) – I can’t remember the year, but it's “STAMPED” with a big “C W” into the obverse. It’s DEEP - heavy impact. I assume the coin is almost worthless like that. (I need to post that one for you guys to look at…)
Thanks all for the interesting and informative comments!
EDIT: I see what some of you are saying - the "22" looks like it's a different "font" compared to the "19".
<< <i>Removed mint mark. A poor job too. >>
wrong quote.
The large cent is counter stamped. There are several collectors of counter stamped coins. If the counter stamp is from a known person it may have additional value.
The 09-S had some harsh cleaning by someone hoping to see a weak VDB on it.
Can you get a close up of the date and S on the 09-S? Just thought it looks something like the S over horizontal S but can't tell from the pics.

Best I have so far:

This coin was tough to capture... I hope "CW" is well-known...

That quote from Forest Gump never gets old....even after almost 20 years since the movie came out.

How about "Coins are like a box of chocolates... You never what what you're going to get..."
ambro51: Haven't looked closely at many of them - I'll check-out the 14d next chance I get...
So the count is about 3/4 for an altered MM and 1/4 for the date. Either way, it's 100% opinion the coin
was altered...
Any opinions on the stamped 1832 half-cent? (Maybe I should have put this in a new thread.)
Thanks!

The date on the 1922 cent exactly as it should be. The mintmark appears to have been ground off.
The half-cent deserves a separte thread or else nobody will see it.
