suggested gold allocation?

tneigtneig Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭
Got to get this year going at some point, so I've allocated another batch towards gold. $10-15k depending upon spot/availability/time.

Is it better to purchase 1oz or smaller increments with higher premiums?

Could be AGEs, - or Apmex or Pamp bars with lower premiums?

Average premiums are present because they are usually attached both on the buy and sell end and that item is wanted more than the no to low premium items. Most items with no to very low premiums will bring just that when trying to sell.

Can't go wrong with any size Gold Amercian Eagles when found at a good price over spot. Currently, 1/4 oz Eagles are a good deal IMHO when bought from the big boy bullion dealers. Plus, when you liquidate, you don't have to find someone who want to drop a couple thousand on 1- 1oz coin. Although the premiums are cheaper the higher the denomination you go, the buyers paying a premium are few and farther between.

Any of the official mint gold from anywhere would be fine. I'm waiting for the next Kangaroo special somewhere myself. Anything you can get with one of the $29-$49 over specials would be a good deal IMO.

Make sure you're on their mailing list..(APMEX..Provident..etc) for special sales notification.

  • I recently added some gold to my holdings incuding a 1 oz. gold prospector in an Engelhard plastic holder.

If you can find what you want for a premium under $50 over that would be a good price as gold is trading in the $1,672 range. I saw some 1 oz. Kangaroo's yesterday for a good price, let me see if I can track it down and post it for you here.

Well here is what I found: Apmex is $1,734.49 for one coin, Gainsville is $1,716.06 for one coin, Golden eagle coins is $1,713.07 for one coin and if you can afford to buy 20 or more Tulving is the cheapest at $1,706 a coin.

Smaller is better. I like US $5 half eagles dated 1986 to the present. Premiums are modest while size, weight and purity are identical to the earlier Liberty and Indian types.
