Rick, Couldn't one of the fakes actually be real if it was the original or "host" coin used to make the fake die? Would there be any way to tell which coin was the "host" coin?

ColoradoCG, the host coin was likely destroyed in the process. The 1871 Shallow N is very scarce, so the die characteristics of the real ones are well documented in my book. When one is found that doesn't match, it is news in the Indian Cent die variety world. The reverse of the fake in the auction is also found on a 1872 Shallow N fake. The identifier is the die crack at 2:00. Keep an eye out for this reverse showing up on a 1877. I haven't seen one yet, but they are probably out there.
Frankly, other than being fake, the coin in the auction is so not original color, I am surprised it passed PCGS and got graded.
Comments
Goldberg's should take it down and PCGS should buy it back.
Here's another one:
Notice the damage on the neck. It is repeating damage from the host coin used to make the fake die.
Here's a third example, with a different reverse.

Thanks for the additional info. I didn't know that the host coins
are likely destroyed when making a fake die, but it makes sense.

Many counterfeit dies are created by a casting process that wouldn't destroy the genuine coin used as a model.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
<< <i>is there any way to tell if the slab is actually PCGS? >>
The coin is actually on the PCGSCoinfacts main page for the 1871. Seems like they slabbed it not recognizing the issue.

That is funny, and Scary at the same time. I does prove that the holder is real.
