I purchased two 1834 half dollars today. I just looked at the edges and one of the has just a lettered edge, and the other had the standard reeded edge between each word. bascially like this:
IIIIII HALF IIIIIIIII DOLLAR IIIIIIIIIII
Is one of these more rare, or are they both common?

a rare thing it is to have different collars within a single year issue

I know there is a photo on CZ of it maybe someone will remember, if not when I get time I'll find it.

I know that 1809 has 3 different varieties of lettered edge, XXXX between words, and iiii between words. But the iiii's are more like small line nicks, as opposed to the standard reeded edge lines.
I was not aware that there were different versions for 1834. One of my 1834 coins looks to have a true reeded edge in the places where there are no words.

<< <i>So that makes it 3 opinions. Super rare, post mint damage, and common. Which is it? >>
If you have a copy of US Early Half Dollar Die Varieties - Overton 4th edition
Please look at pages 753 and 754.
Way in the back of the book where only the bravest venture.
According to Overton these these edge hash marks appear on 1830-1836 lettered edge halves. Edge type #7 was used for 1832-1836 and has these lines between each word.
His book leaves you with the impression that all 1834's have these separating lines. But it sounds like that's not so? 1834 was full of hub and die experimentation. Maybe with edge dies too?
Thanks, hijacker, for raising this topic and for the great images!
Still learning,
Lance.
any images from the book for us to compare?
the "reeds" still look off to me, but then again i'm a big fan of comparable images

If anyone can find images of edge lettering it is you, Mr. Newman!

This may, or may not be of help. Here is an image of one of the edge lettering patterns
used on early half dollars between 1794-1836 as shown in "Early Half Dollar Die Varieties
1794-1836, 3rd edition, by Al C. Overton.
This was first used in 1809 and is an example from that year. Note the reed like marks are
somewhat slanted and only appear between the words DOLLAR and FIFTY and OR and
HALF.
At the time 1834-1836 the following may have been used with more reed like marks.
Overton covers this information at the beginning of the 1832 issue on page 517.
"The design of the obverse master die was modified slightly in 1832 by chief engraver
William Kneass. The relief of the bust was substantially raised, hair curls were finer and thinner,,,
,,,the profile of the bust was also altered. The edge design for the 1832 half dollar generally
standardized with the vertical reeding between the words FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR and
a star between dollar and fifty."
The OP coin apears to be an O-119.

Hello I got one also is it worth getting it graded or not worth it so is mine a O-119 Overton Half the lettering reads * FIFTY CENTS OHR ALF A DOLLAR.
So we can call this a Alf Half you know that very Odd show from the 1980's with that alien
Does the Crack add to its value
This forum is great all this time looking and here it was all along i had some other halfs from the Teens but i already sold them too bad i could of done better research on them they sold really fast on face book back then
Thanks Again You all and happy new year
Also please reply to this if its worth grading a person told me it had been cleaned if it had it was a long time ago and i check the weight and it's within its parameters
Please see images
Yours looks like a O-102, Large date, Large letters, R.1
with a recut 3. The crack through the 8 in the date is
a planchet problem, or occurred later as PMD.
The edge lettering seems to be the proper one for
the date, but often these pieces were run through the
machine more than once & received a jumbled &
repeated lettering.

Others here may offer better opinions for having
it graded. The crack at the date , I believe, would
lower it's grade. I don't believe the edge treatment
will affect the grade that much.
In future it would be good to offer a large image of
the obverse & reverse from straight on so , members
can see the coin better.
Good luck & tell Alf hello !
