The coin is Proof. Krause doesn't list a mintage.

The mintage figure of 37 for proofs is from Jaeger's Die deutschen Munzen seit 1871 -- the German equivalent of our Red Book.

No mistake. The ones you found on eBay are not proof strike.

Congrats to the OP on a really nice coin! image

I would question the source of the other book. German Mint does not have any records as far as I know,
also the question would be this: How does the TPG decide that it is a proof, unless they have proof that some were made.
but will check with a source.

I just checked with my friends in Germany and the answer is:
PCGS is correct. there were 37 coins made in PP = polished Plate = proof.
apparently todays price is approximately EURO 1400 to 1500 , about $ 1800-2000

Very nice surprise! Had no idea the coin would be worth so much!
Any thoughts as to which venue would be best should I be inclined to sell the coin. I have a set of MS but don't really collect the proofs.

On a first level, TPGs as well as experienced collectors, can determine if a coin is a proof from its special characteristics (edge, double strike, cameo or not, etc). The research on how many of these were made comes second. I know of a collector who has been repeatedly lucky, by bidding on South African gold ponds and half ponds, listed as unc at auctions, that turned out to be proofs when graded, of extreme rarity and very high value.

    Nice catch! image

    Interesting..
IMO, it is only proof by manufacturing, when the Mint states that they did struck a limited number of proof coins. Nothing else can be called proof, regardless of the quality of a strike.
    Question:
How can ant TPG call a coin proof unless they are 100% sure...??? oh I forgot.... it is only their "opinion" we are buying.
So, what happens if the eventuality should arise that proofs of more than the minted quantity is recorded , counting all the TPG's pop reports?
Could some of them maybe mistaken for first strikes, maybe the first 50 or so?

YQQ, I'm not sure what you're getting at. Mint records have nothing to do whether or not a coin is a proof. The coin itself will tell you. The coin in the OP is a nice and very scarce Proof.

eBay is probably the best option.
