PCGS Coin Sniffer

I am not sure if all PCGS graded coins are sniffed or if only PCGS Secure Plus coins are sniffed. If anyone knows please post.

This is a great video on how it works ...
PCGS Coin Sniffer Video

The coin sniffer certainly helps to give one more confidence on coins where the colors are unusual ...

We used sniffers in industrial laboratories where I have worked, and they were very effective. Looks like good progress by PCGS. Cheers, RickO

did you see at the end where don has a list of substances on the computer screen

I noticed one said urine. I wonder what kind of effect you get from peeing on a coin?

It has been said many times here. The Sniffer is used with Secure Plus and not the regular service. PCGS may also use the Sniffer on non-SP submissions when suspicions are aroused, according to DW.

What I want to know, is why aren't they waring gloves in the video? They are touching the coing with there bare hands, and even make a comment about hand oils in the video.

Gloves aren't used in the grading room either.

I think the feeling is that there's a greater likelihood of mishandling a coin due to gloves. I'm sure PCGS employees are quite careful with raw coins.

I thought that the video / process was quite impressive.

A pcgs secure holder certainly would provide me with an added level of confidence when making a purchase.

I wonder why they require it be performed on higher value world coins, is there more fraud on the dark side than U.S. coins?

I think the argument that a un-gloved hand touches the coin leads one to wonder at the validity of the test.
Nitrile gloves are worn in too many jobs not to have been proven effective at preventing cross contamination.

Properly fitted nitrile gloves would be the best method....although I am sure there is little "fumble fingering' going on with graders....still possible though..Cheers, RickO

I couldn't help but notice the little vial of "Verdi-Gone," which now goes by the name "Verdi-Care." I wonder if they object to neutralizing verdigris or that it leaves a film on the coin?

That stuff was pretty easy to figure out from the MSDS. Unless there is something else in it, it should wash off fairly readily. Funny that Verdi-Chemist guy hasn't been around atall.

It actually barks, how amusing (unless it's your coin).

If doctors can perform brain surgery with gloves, then graders can grade with gloves. All due respect, IMO that's a ridiculous argument.

But it won't stop be from submitting coins because the end result is a sealed slab, and my coins are much less likely to get damaged over time in slabs than 2x2 flips!

PS: I love the sniffer! image
