<< <i>Yes, because a person who didn't follow baseball has no idea who a person is/was means they certainly aren't THAT famous. >>
I've been surrounded by testosterone for the past 5 years and not one person ever mentioned him. They discussed a LOT of sports players from all sports, but never once was his name mentioned. If a bunch of dudes aren't talking about him, then he's probably not that famous to the average American. >>
If YOU say so, it must be the case. Because "a bunch of dudes" is a great sample size, right? I'm just about 33, and wouldn't put several of the players on **your** list on mine, so they obviously aren't that popular.
I'm quite surprised at the number of lists that don't have Jackie Robinson on them. He may not have been the greatest player (#52 in the ESPN list), but he did break the color barrier and is historically significant and still relevant. I see Clemente on many lists, and while he was a fantastic ball player and by all accounts a good dude, I'm sure a poll on a typical street corner would result in far more people knowing Jackie over Roberto.

Good argument... My sampling of 1,000s of dudes against **you**. My sampling of dudes has to be a better sample of society to one man's wife (or you).
Edited to add: My sampling is 18-50 year olds, so your age group is very well represented in my group of dudes.
LMAO at anyone who thinks Ichiro Suzuki is more famous than DiMaggio, Mantle or Pete Rose.
in no particular order, my top ten: Babe Ruth Hank Aaron Willie Mays Mickey Mantle Lou Gehrig Ted Williams Joe Di Maggio Pete Rose Honus Wagner Stan Musial (As a Card fan, there's no way I could not include him) Honorable mentions: Ty Cobb, Sandy Koufax
Hideo Nomo and Ichiro are names known by 3 billion people in the world; I don't know if that makes them top 10 in fame, but they've got high name recognition.
My top 100 link above was messed up (fixed now). I'd recommend you asking your non-baseball card collecting friends, spouses, whatever who they recognize on the list. That will get us a much better list of fame.

Ichiro Suzuki IS the MOST Famous PERSON in the multithousand Year HISTORY of JAPAN! (again) Use your brains please. Im sure 99.99999998% of all Japanese citizens over 10 years old (today) knows who he is.... not to mention a high % of people in general in the world of sports and all people via news and internet etc... You can NOT say that about Babe Ruth in the US today, but you could in his playing days (ie 99.99999997% knew the name in the US in 1934)
YOU have to judge FAME only during their career by their own PEERS, not if some faka in Mongola know Jeter BS.... no average everyday faka in 1930 knew who Teddy Ballgame or Joltin Joe was but they did know Cobb and Gehrig duh
think about before you DOUBT! aloha
PS Fame = Name Recognition kudos to 'Bunch-o-Bull' (a few posts above) for knowing this, Im surprised no one else listed Ichiro... him and Ruth were the only 2 I should have put on the list, they are so far above the rest its not even a list in reality
I'd put Manny on the list. Why? Because he has a common first name and everybody* reading this post knows who I am referring to without having included his last name.
Find a list of famous baseball players of all time with Ichiro on it... every list I've looked at (Top 10, Top 50, Top 100, Top 125, etc.), doesn't have him on their lists. Manny (from Ice Age) doesn't make the grade either.
It appears some of you think an ALL TIME list should only include players of the present, since they're obviously the most famous at any given moment. For those of us using our brains, we understand that people come-and-go, especially my wives, and know that an all time list is comprised of people that stand the test of time. I doubt Ichiro and Manny will EVER be on a Top 10 All Time list now or in the future. Was Ichiro VERY famous for 12 years... YES! But his 15 minutes of fame are over and that gentlemen is the true litmus test for an all time list.

My dad swam with Joe DiMaggio once at a NYC gentleman's club when he was a kid. Imagine walking into LA Fitness and seeing Bonds on the Smith machine!
