NEWP: Controversial Neon Toned 1831 Bust Half PCGS AU53 OGH!

Many of you may have read the thread about the 1831 Bust Half with neon toning. I am the one who purchased this amazing coin! In the past 7 years, I had two opportunities to buy it, but passed as it was too "pricey"

When I saw this piece in the previews in Heritage, it went onto my watch list. There was a vast discussion from a well known dealer ATS, which brought a great deal of attention to this coin. It was described by him as the "Most Amazing Toned Bust Half I have ever seen". When I look at this coin in hand, it appears that there is something radioactive making the coin glow from the inside out! Every crevice of lady liberty glows with greens, reds, and violets. There is toning on this example that no image will capture. It must be seen in hand to be truly appreciated. Mint luster adds to the amaing eye appeal of this piece. That along with the gold CAC sticker and old holder makes a perfect trifecta.

I may have paid a strong amount for it, but have no regrets. This coin will be one that will reamin in my collection for many years to come.

Congratulations. For the most part, you always have to 'overpay' to acquire the truly spectacular coins. And those are the ones that someone else will almost always 'overpay' to acquire from you when the time comes.

Controversy was the price
But I learned earlier that the under bidder was a major dealer.

I think it's beautiful and I wish I owned it!! Just make sure you get this one TrueView photographed and post that image as I bet Phil would make this one explode with color. I have paid many many multiples of the price guide prices for monster color too so don't sweat the price. You just never see this kind of neon color in this particular series (at least I dont recall seeing that) -- so it's a true rarity.

Love the neon greens/magenta/reds all over the bust! I value Mark's opinion and if he says its one of the best toned example for the series that he has ever seen that says a lot. The color and originality makes that coin very special. IMO you didn't over pay, especially if a dealer was the underbidder!

I would have to say its the best toned bust half I've ever seen and if anyone has a better toned example, at least in their opinion please post so we all can see!

If neon toning is the standard I think Ankur's coin wins hands down. My tastes haven't gone that direction on 200 year old coins. Maybe I'll mature.

If you'd like to see examples of CBH's with attractive toning start a thread. This board has collectors with amazing pieces. It would not be right to post them here.

I remember when Chris Sharpe owned that coin, and when he sold it. Chris had several avatars/names on these boards but his youthful overexcuberance caused multiple bammage.
