I suppose if you eliminate the nice coins bought as a "first shot", there really isn't any benefit to having first shot, is there? image

I agree completely and was only pointing out the positive outcome possibility of the scenario.

I have found some nice coins on the bourse in areas in which I collect. But they have changed hands two or three times beforehand, and their selling prices are such that only a fool would buy them. Ie, I saw a nice type Capped Bust Half in a PC 5 holder. The seller wanted $14K for what was a $10K coin. No thank you.

Different people quite often value the same coin differently. Doesn't necessarily mean one of them is wrong.

Not exactly. This guy is 25% high on everything he sells. This is typically what happens if I don't get first shot on a nice coin.

Tom - You put that in a most basic, yet eloquent manner. While many coins can be considered "common," when they are in a superb, unique, and uncommon condition, they are no longer "common." Many of my best coins meeting this criteria were the result of a "first shot." I have sold many of the same on the same basis.

From reading between the posts, it seems the context matters.image

Sometimes, you get first shot or no shot.
Other times, you are better off with a flu shot.

It depends on the coin, the circumstances, the price, etc.

Here are some "first shot" coins in my collection:

Maybe 25% high to you, but if others are buying, then obviously not to them.
  • I'd post some of my true "first shot" items but I don't think you guys feel like looking at more photographs of the Mauretania being built! image
