Why Coin Dealers Drink...Part CCCXCVII

From the coin dealer-to-dealer network:

"A guy walks in and sets two tubes of AGE on the desk and says
"I need to sell these". I open the tubes and count them. A total
of 40 oz. I give him the price and he says "I'm losing money but
I got no choice". I get his ID and write up the paperwork. When I
finish printing the check, I pick up the tubes and get suspicious.
I recount the coins and only 38, 19 in each tube! The coins were
sitting on the desk the whole time. No way for him to open and take
one out. The only thing I can figure is he switched with two short
rolls without me seeing him. These thieves are getting good. BTW. I
couldn't prove anything so I kicked him out"

It would be wild if you had close circuit tv, and review the tape!

    Scum....

Glad to see your intuition is still on point.

It's all about what the people want...

The dealer whom I quoted posted this followup comment:

"I always empty them out of the tube to count. He seemed to get a
little nervous when I opened the tube the second time to count.
When I said that it was two short, he said I must have miscounted.
    Said no, you miscalculated me."

Later comment by a different dealer:

"I've had 5 different people in the last 2 days try to sell
me plated .999 silver bars - always the same, pull out an
anniversary or Christmas bar, get a quote and then "Oh, I've
got 20, 30, 40 more just like this" and they start emptying
their pockets...and of course, nobody had any idea that the
only real bar they had was the first one they showed me...
and of course, they no longer wanted to sell the one good bar."

Went into a little antique store. In the case I noted lots of junk coins, and some sheets I couldn't make out. Upon inspection I could see there was something not right in the sheet of morgans. (thankfully for the ex phony coins and lessons learned here)

I asked what was up, and as I went to take one out of the sleeve; she said they were fake. I noted the dirty grey dusty appearance and smaller size and feel. She said some guys came in and said they found them in a wall, but didn't really know their value. Some very key rare dates too. She bought whatever amount for $500 without checking at all.

When she contacted the police, they said these guys made their rounds and she was not the only one. I asked how much she wanted for these. She said $10 a piece because you can still use them to fill the slots in your collections. They remain where they are.

Did you tell her that was $9.99 more than you were willing to pay? image
