How much does a rim file take away from the value of a coin?

I'm talking about a post rim file done to hide a rim bump. I have a 1843-0 half dollar that is a well struck EF45 but with this problem. I suppose its worth around $200 without the problem. Its a small to med. size file mark and blends in well with the coin. Also , would it grade? I have seen them in holders before.

If they got into holders it means someone screwed up. As to value, opinions will vary widely. Especially according to how big and distracting the filing is and where it is (obverse vs. reverse). My guess is it cuts the value by at least half. However, I personally wouldn't be interested even at that.

It depends upon the severity, but I would estimate the coin is worth no more than half of its value in original condition. Compare the filed coin to a similar coin of lower grade (and value) that has not been tampered with and when you get to the point where you would choose the rim filed coin, you will have your answer. Personally, I would prefer an original, AG-3 or G-4, to a rim filed coin of that denomination and date.

Thanks, the rim file is on the obverse at about 11:00, probably about the worst place it could be!

From where you said it is you will be lucky to get $50.00 for it IMO.

File marks on the rim are really killers because it is a sign of a repair / deception. The fact that it has been done by a coin doctor to hide a defect is really a big negative. It is worse than the original rim bump because that falls into the "stuff happens" category while the file mark is totally intentional.
