Toned Buff... Opinions sought.. AT or NT?

nwcoastnwcoast Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭✭✭
In looking over some of my purchases from last year, I'm left wondering about this Buffalo..
In hand it's got some pretty wild color and is more flashy than any of my other toned Buffalos. This is especially evident when gazing at my Dansco.
What do ya think panel? Did I make a mistake on this one?
Any guesses on the grade- providing it qualified for one....
Thank you...

    Looks NT to me...
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

My gut says album toned, and pretty. I will let buff collectors venture on the grade, but it looks nicely uncirculated to me..

My guess -- dipped and scrubbed bright with baking soda and then spent 30 years in an album.

I tend to agree with Frank..... Certainly aged tarnish, but likely as a result of a long ago cleaning or poorly rinsed dip. Cheers, RickO

I tend to agree with the sentiment that the toning is natural, but the surfaces aren't.

I've cracked out an NGC-graded buffalo a few years ago that was in the ballpark of this coin's toning (with some but not as much haze). Came back questionable toning. FWIW.

I would wait for Cape to weigh in. He will have a good opinion.

    I'd say somebody AT'd a cleaned coin.

Sort of looks that way to me too. Looks like it has signs of slight circulation/wear and/or possible scrubbing. Toning added to gloss over all that.

market acceptable ..... but at best a 63+ I believe the toning from the image is real if you are around bring the coin to table 203 at fun and I can see it in hand and then evaluate this buff .

Cleaned, and retoned over a long time is my opinion too. And possibly MA and gradable. Worth a shot...or two or three.

Thank you for the kind invitation and offer. If I was on the east coast then I likely would go for it!
Thank you all for your intelligent input. Looking at the coin in hand now, I'm inclined to think that iit may indeed be toned over an old cleaning... It's still a lovely coin though and has an iridescence that doesn't come through in the photos. It's pretty flashy and has a different color profile than my other toners and that's what got me worried...

Thanks again and maybe I'll just have to submit this one, as suggested, for the final word.

The toning is natural or at least market acceptable, but the coin does look like it was cleaned in the past.

Unless you can see "Hairlines" which I don't see in your image, I would not say wiped. If it's was dipped that's another story. The toning looks fine,"album toning" would be my guess. I would send it in and find out, it's worth a shot. As far as the grade I would guess 63-64.... Luster plays a huge part as the strike looks par for the 1919, a tad weak....CHD
The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
