Don't you hate it when...

you see a coin you want in a older generation holder and the hologram is all but gone? I wonder how much it hurts the value of such coins that are in them?

I've had a couple like that and just leave the Heritage auction sticker on it, to cover it up.

    Buy the coin.

Stickers and plastic or lack of will not change the coin.

I don't think it affects the value of the coin much, if at all. It only bothers me when the slab is "collectable" as it ruins the value of the plastic.

It wouldn't bother me in the least.

I don't think I'd even notice the hologram.

A big scratch across the slab is a huge distraction though.

even if the slab is broken in half it doesnt affect the value of the coin.... unless the coin is broken in half as well. there is an old saying that goes something like... "buy the coin not the holder"
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything

Yes I'm well aware of the ole saying, but in reality there are all kinds of collectors out there in the hobby who think that the older generation holders have conservatively graded coins in those holders therefore making them a little more desirable.

I don't think they would care about the hologram on the back, much like how some green beans turn "platinum" when the color wears away.

    If only that were true.

Damaged holograms are too commonplace to trouble me.

Not a big deal. Better to have a nice hologram, but do you have a choice?

I've got a bunch of those. It's just a fact of life with that generation of holders...

While it doesn't affect the value one bit for me, I can certainly see it affecting the desirability of the coin for some collectors. You don't have to be a slab collector to prefer an intact, problem-free holder. I can't imagine too many collectors of art not caring if the frames that their art is hanging in is damaged or not. Imagine putting a Picasso in a scratched, dented, or otherwise imperfect frame.

I have encountered on just a few occasions customers expressing concern (and a couple ultimately passing) on a coin because the hologram was missing. Their concern was regarding the authenticity of the slab. New (or particularly worrisome) collectors, for the most part.

The holograms are always peeling off because of the adhesive used on
dealers/ collectors' stickers lift them off. Especially on that style NGC
holder... I think someone calls those "soap bars".

It's the coin I am more concerned about and I really don't give a hoot
about any hologram. As long as the slab isn't hairlined to death, ( which
can be polished off ), I'm ok with a partial outer label.

    BTW, that 3Legger is stunning.
