  • JrThurmer- I have the set done and on the PSa Registry. I thought I was the only "crazy" willing to do this set. It's great to meet a "fellow patient". I still need 2 cards for the SOTT set, so if you have any dupes, please PM me.

Why does BGS call the Hockey 1997 Legends Autographs?

  • This realization isn't on the level of the cause of the Topps Frank Thomas NNOF, but I figured out the cause of the ink on the back of the Webster cards. I have two of them, and the spot of ink is on the same place on each card on the back, left side. I think he was signing them, then stacking them on top of each other. It makes sense that the very last letter wasn't quite dry, and then marked the back of the next card.

I have a Dorsett autograph and the upper right corner has a slight ding.

Jrthurmer, are you the one who always outbids me on auctions for redemption cards when they come up?! The redemptions used to sell in the single digits if at all. I should have picked them up then, because now they sell as well as, or better than some of the autographs. Have you picked up the different variations in the set? The 2008, and 2009 updates don't show up on ebay much. While the cards from the 1997 set still show up with some regularity for a set that is 16 years old, they don't come up as much as they did 10 years ago. I don't think it's due to lack of interest, but maybe more are ending up in collections? That's my perception anyway.

I like the college football and hockey sets too. At the moment I've only picked up autographs of players I like, rather than go for the whole thing. I prefer college football to pro football, but it's understandable that the college set doesn't seem to be as popular as the original 1997 pro set. The hockey and college sets were well done, with the great photography, showing the game and how it used to look (no ads on the boards for many of the hockey cards, players without helmets). One of the fun things about putting together the 1997 set was the mystery of who was in the set, and determining the SPs and SSPs. Upper Deck took away some of the mystery with the college set by releasing short print information for the set.

  • How many redemptions do you have and which ones? I have another friend who has the absolute best 1997 legends set grade wise that is collecting the redemptions as well. Only reason I started was because I bought 6 packs of legends and pulled the Billy "white shoes" Johnson redemption. I then found a guy selling off some of the SP's who had the Trumpy and this is the same guy I got my Dorsett from that graded BGS 9. When did upper deck release the SPs. I know they lumped them into A, B, C, D, E did they release a print run?

    These Are all Group A

    Aaron Rodgers
    Adrian Peterson
    Dan Marino
    Drew Brees
    Jerry Rice
    John Elway
    Ken Stabler
    Rod Woodson
    Troy Aikman
    Warren Moon

    These are all Group B

However Ive seen more of some of the group A autos than some of the Group B autos.

I have not done the update set for the football from the ultimate. Ive bought a few here and there and have ended up selling them.

  • I don't have any of the unredeemed redemption cards, I keep getting outbid! Maybe it's your friend.

I agree with you that some of the "A" class shows up more frequently than others, same as the "B" class. For example, I didn't know Eddie George was in the set until I saw it on the SP list. I did end up seeing one on ebay. The cards aren't always listed with consistent titles. That can happen with any set, but these seem prone to confusion.

  • I was tempted to do the 2011 college set, but unlike Futureman, I prefer pro football to college. Plus, when I saw how pricey some of the cards were, I didn't want to accept the challenge.
I've even decided to stop my SP Authentic graded set run because Upper Deck lost it's NFL license. I'll pick up some key RC's from SP Authentic, but that's all.

I don't have many of the 97 redemption cards. I mailed them most of them in. Boy was I disappointed when they sent replacement cards.image

I've been doing the Ultimate Collection updates only because Upper Deck continued the numbering on them from the original 97 Legends set. On the PSA registry, those are listed as separate sets though.

Keep the info and pics coming guys. The cards look great!

  • Nice stuff everyone. I picked up a '97 legends auto of Bill Bradley yesterday, and '11 UD Legends is one of my favorite products.

  • << <i>Why does BGS call the Hockey 1997 Legends Autographs? >>

The top line is the actual set they are from but since they copy the 1997 design, I guess UD used that as the insert name
  • Good to see this thread resurrected. Are you building this set on the Beckett registry? Why did you grade the redemption cards?
