I'm bad at these but I'll guess au55.

Nice coin. I once owned a lovely 53. That coin looks PCGS 45, NGC 50-53.

According to Doug Winter, the 1842-O tends to come weakly struck and with distracting marks. He suggests a collector look for a coin with as few marks as possible and with original color.

Although it's always hard to tell from a static image, this coin looks like it has some original dirt in the wing feathers and the marks aren't too distracting.

I'd side with RYK's estimates of the grades on this coin, except I think it's nicer than an XF-45.

My grade is: I like it and would buy it in a heartbeat.

I bought it from Doug. Said it was one of the only fully original pieces he has seen. As you note these come heavily marked and weakly struck.

I'm working on an 1842 half eagle set. Have this and an AU53 CAC Large Letters also from Doug.

I am going to agree with DaveG and disagree with RYK. image

    Here is my XF-40:

The OP's coin has much more meat on it. I am more in the 50/53 camp now.

I really like that 42-D SD. XF45? He just listed a 45 CAC an hour or so ago.

I've been looking for a 42-D LL for awhile. There is one in the FUN sale but its not for me.

Agree. Hard to evaluate the quality and intensity of the remaining luster from those pics which would effect the assigned grade.

Edited to add that RYK has a good eye for original crusty gold and if he likes a gold coin I usually also like it.

Nice coin. Probably lightened to enhance the pop/wow factor, as evidenced my the light crustiness around the perimeter of the left side. The crust was most likely heavier. But I am ok with it.

What concerns me is the rim issues from 10 to noon. But I do think the rim issue at 2, is a planchet defect.

I'd be at XF45 because of the issues with the rim already mentioned. Nice coin.

I'd expect a little more luster for a 50 grade regardless of the weak strike tendencies. PCGS tends to go no higher than XF45 if luster can only be found deep within protected devices.
On an AU50 would want a little more of that luster penetrating into the open fields. 10% luster overall? Still, AU50 is a fair grade too as those wing feathers are very sharp.

If it's a crossover....I'd guess that it doesn't cross. image ..............you're gonna have to crack it to find the real grade.
