Wax Box Building Question

I know some of you will build a box of vintage unopened wax boxes. Buying a box and maybe a pack or two at a time. Does this affect the general collating of what you will get? I mean, you could get more commons than normal or on the flip side, lots of stars. I am curious of your experiences or thoughts on this.

I think you answered your own question.....that is if the box(packs) was ever opened.......

If you are doing it to Basketball Fleer product then heck yes.
And I think you know the answer. But yes who knows what collation will be in a mixed box.

<< <i>In most instances, isn't collation random anyway? Some boxes will have 8 Jordans and only have 1. >>

No, if an 86 fleer box is truly original it will have a guaranted number ofof Jordans.

For other issues/sports it doesn't matter as much though it will affect collation in any case.

  • Well I was considering building a box of 75 mini's, but it would be a serious disappointment to buy lots of packs that have commons in them. I am guessing the more packs you have, the better your odds. But I just was hashing out ideas in my head and wanted some feedback as far as experiences go.

A 1975 Mini box isnt a bad idea. But those are easy to find full from a fresh case. It works better if you were putting together a box pre 1971. Takes a long time but those have premiums I think as a full box as you dont see them that often.

Minis are cut very similarly so I wouldn't recommend that as centering would be all over the place which is atypical of a 75 box which I suppose wouldn't be too bad if you got an otherwise truly OC box, lol..

BBCE had boxes running around $2100 but it seems they sold out. I have not seen any for sale elsewhere as far as a box goes. They still have packs at $48 each. I dont know what other resource outside of eBay that has boxes or packs.

A 71 or earlier might be a little bit of a stretch for my budget right now, although it would be great to do.

<< <i>I don't know a lot about unopened material so take this question with a grain of salt. But at $2100 a box, that's $58/pack. If they're selling packs for $48, that seems to be quite a premium on the box, which I often thoguht sold for a slight discount. Is that kind of premium for a box normal? That issue isn't even sealed to my knowledge, other than BBCE of course. >>

To answer original post, I will say that with most years of any value, you will get fewer stars purchasing by the pack because collation orders are relatively widely posted, unless you are purchasing from one of the very few trusted sources like BBCE.

In response to the quote above, I will pay a premium for a full pre-1981 box if BBCE, particularly 1971-73. A 20% premium for 1975 sounds right. I would expect even high as you move backward in time.
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.
  • Yeah, $1700 sounds right. I double checked my math and $2100 did not fit.

So, if I am understanding correctly, it does not sound like you are recommending 75 mini's as a way to go as there is less likely the collation will be evenly distributed, and centering will be all over the place?
