Rechargeable battery problem

I purchased 4 Powerex 9.6v batteries last summer/spring for my detector and had no problems with them until today. I carry 2 for spares in a little pouch. Today after detecting I could feel a warm spot on my back and after checking the pouch one of the batteries was hot and the plastic on it had warped. I put it in the back of the pick up and it was still warm when I got home. Anybody know what the problem might be?

Sounds like it was shorted...did the two come in pole contact in the pouch? If not, then perhaps it is a defective unit....usually has to form a circuit to heat up. Cheers, RickO

I had a 9v battery do that before. Thought that maybe two batteries touched in some way to cause it. Got rid of it right away just to be sure. Can always get some new ones. Don't want anything exploding.
