If I started collecting again...

MidLifeCrisisMidLifeCrisis Posts: 10,618 ✭✭✭✭✭
What would you suggest I collect?

I like to get pretty specific with my collecting so I can stay focused.

I built a decent type set of colonial coins all having a traceable provenance.

Should I build another colonial type set? With provenances?

What about a collection of 18th century foreign gold that circulated in early America?

Something completely different?

Not saying I will start collecting again, but I'd like to hear ideas.

Maybe you could try stamps. Lots of variety and very little outlay.

<< <i>Since you already have experience and knowledge of colonial coins, suggest that this time you look for nice representative type examples without limiting yourself to only coins with a pedigree.

Pick up a beater, used clad Washington quarter Dansco album and start filling it from pocket change.
(You can always pick up various dates inserting dollar bills into self-serve car wash change machines.)

This should satisfy your craving without spending anything extra (outside of the album).
Once you're done, roll them up and deposit them at your local bank.

    Start over.

I think VARIETIES can make collecting a lot of fun by adding that extra dimension.
I would take that into consideration because it can allow you to Cherrypick pieces that have added value for when you do go to sell years later.
It adds the extra challenge! image

You can you apply this to almost any series you select.

You've mentioned this before; it's my recommendation. Focus on pieces counterstamped by Brasher and other assayers, and those with pedigree/provenance, and those in older holders.

The only thing I'd change with the above advice is to seek the best example and the varieties.

You could do any denomination but quarters are the least picked over.

While you're filling the set something will come to you if you're really a collector.

How about a low ball complete set of Classic Commems in PCGS holders, with still-attractive patina, etc? That may prove to be fun and challenging.

I would rec. doing a large cent date and type set. It could be as PQ as you want it, in any grade you choose, for any issue. Cool historic coins.

Foreign gold that circulated in the colonies and early federal period. Maybe throw in some antique coin scales for good measure (these were much used to avoid getting stuck with shaved pieces). There are some interesting twists, like counterstamped or 're-Castainginated' pieces too.

Oddly enough, I would NOT recommend Walkers, as they are a VERY daunting task. SO glad that I didn't know then what I do know now, as I would have likely been very intimidated. I have to be honest, though; I STILL would have pursued them, as my passion for them is great. Collect what you like---that's the bottom line. I LIKE Walkers, so it was in my blood to collect them. I'm not sure how old you are or your financial situation but that must come into play, also, when considering what to collect. GOOD LUCK!

I think stamps too since they seem to be having issues with getting others interest in that hobby. I know there is a small coin and stamp show in the area and the stamp section always seems really quiet. I did see one of those encased stamps on Pawn Stars.

How about the best circulated colonials you can find at $500.00 or less each image

This could make for quite a challenge and if you want to exit again your not heavily invested.

That is definitely not the way I intended the if to when comment. I am not tired of hearing anything that MLC has to say. The comment just meant that although he sold his coins, he did not really seem to stop being a collector at heart. I look forward to hearing about his new direction if (when) he chooses to actively collect again.

I don't remember ever saying that...but I still have not bought a coin.

I came very close though. And I thank the dealer with whom i was working for indulging me and discussing various options.

But in the end, I decided not to buy anything, for all the same reasons I stopped collecting six months ago.

*** But this doesn't mean that I'm no longer interested in coins; that I think anyone else should sell their collection and stop like I did; or that i have a negative opinion of any of you for continuing to collect what you like and enjoying the hobby in your own way. It just means that I enjoy the hobby in a different way now. ***

I believe this quote from Bongobongo sums it up

"If you buy what you like, at a price you can afford at the time, then things will be easier. If you buy what other people like, borrow to fund it and expect multiple of return, then you are likely to be unhappy. Bongo say nearly everything depreciates over time. Bongo would not pay $500 for a silver bell this Christmas and expect it to be worth $550 next year, but Bongo knows a Silver Bell is not old coin. Or is it? Bongo maybe not surprised that old coin is like any other limited non essential commodity and subject to the whims of taste and market. Put the coin in book and enjoy it. If it is worth more when you come to sell it, well done. If not, then you have had enjoyment out of it. Remember that old coin is only worth a few dollars in physical material value – This is why value is an esoteric concept in many ways and it may be vulgar to assign any monetary value to old coin unless you are a Russian Oligarch or Chinese shoddy goods factory owner."
