Came up with some nice Ryans this weekend ('77 and '79)

Haven't really been in awhile, but scouring the Frank & Sons show again, I came across these two.

How do you think they'll do?

The '77 looks like it has really great centering, even on the reverse. The '79 looks really nice on the front, but back has really poor centering...which seems to be pretty regular for the issue.

Edit: Sorry about the back scan dirty picture - gotta clean the top of that scanner lid some day...

  • I would think 8's on both, but if you want a solid 6 on each, let me submit for you.

I would say strong 8's too... make sure you check the surface, these cards can hide surface wrinkles very easily.

Without any unseen surface creases, etc. I think they are both 9's and 1977 has a chance for a 10.
Work hard and you will succeed!!

I always assume they will be a 5 or 6. Especially the '77. Why sell raw when you can grade yourself and sell for huge money. My feeling is there is always a reason for it being sold raw.

Thanks all for the input! I will sub them both and report back with scans and results.

I try to lean a bit conservative on the grading myself. The surfaces are clean on both cards - no spiders, creasing, or marks on the front. They register quite well that I can see. Any dust that you see on the '79 is from my dirty scanner. I'd like to hope for a 10 for the '77, but I think it will be '77 - 9 and '79 - 8.

As far as no reason for it being sold raw, that's not true a lot of the times. If you go to Frank & Sons with any sort of frequency, you know there are quite a few that set up there that sell raw mostly. One lady sets up there and she has really high end stuff a lot of the time...but for outrageous prices imo. If you ever go, first make sure you hit Tim's table in the back of the warehouse (I bought the Ryans from him); he always has high quality raw stuff that cycles every week. It's hard to even get into the boxes sometimes as it's always crowded around his table.

For the '77 I paid 20.00. I knew it looked great, and he gave me a price for a high quality card. He had it behind the counter, and not in one of the raw boxes. For the '79 I paid 10.00 (this one was in a raw box). Just loved the centering on that card, and for me 10.00 was well worth it!

Awesome cards. I hope they grade well for you. Please update the thread when ever you get them back.

    Great pick ups!

You can still find decent raw cards at shows if you search for them.
Not all high grade raw stuff is tampered with like many here seem to believe.
80% or more of the collectors/dealers out there still don't grade stuff.
    For whatever reasons.
