Michael C. Annis, in Memoriam

WTCGWTCG Posts: 8,940 ✭✭✭
Just to let everybody here know, especially those who knew him personally that regretfully dealer Michael "Mike" Annis of Ann Arbor, MI passed away this morning. He was 67. Mike had been battling the symptoms of ALS/ Lou Gerhig's disease for several years and his condition rapidly worsened in the last year.

Known for his comprehensive knowledge on just about everything, Mr. Annis was a staple at every major coin show and convention for several decades. He set up at virtually every Long Beach, FUN, ANA, CSNS as well as the smaller MSNS shows until last year. Collectors liked him because he had a propensity for knowing great coins when he saw one and the women liked him for the beautiful jewelry he sold alongside his coins.

Over the course of the last decade Mike has helped me immensely in this industry especially with building connections with other colleagues. Personally I owe him lots of gratitude.

Sad to hear this. I was introduced to him about 10 yrs ago from a friend. I always enjoyed checking over his stuff at the major shows.
He seemed to be one of the few that really understood what the collector was looking for.

I had not planned on returning to the Forum, but this sad event overcomes my attitude towards unnecessary threads.

Mike was a super duper dealer and friend. He always found a beautiful ancient for my wife Stacey, selling us a coin
earring, pendant at least every other year at the ANA. Both of us will miss his great personality, but we have fond
memories and beautiful reminders of his graciousness and attention to our needs.

We have lost a fab gentleman

I first met Mike many years ago at the MSNS Thanksgiving show in Dearborn. Always a pleasure to talk to and deal with.

I remember buying one of my first commems from him - a Connecticut in a PCGS OGH.

Wish I still had it now. image

Sorry to hear about this. He continued to set up at some smaller shows even as his health worsened. He always seemed to really enjoy the coin show atmosphere.

I first met Mike Annis around 1990 during a Long Beach show while I was eating alone one night. I was about 21 years old and this was my first or second Long Beach so I only knew a few national dealers at that point. He was sitting at the table next to me and recognized me as David's son. My dad was also a small-time dealer at the time and Mike really went out of his way to be nice to both of us but really made me feel a lot more comfortable at the big shows in those early days. It has been tough for me to see him ill these past couple years and very sad to see him go. My father also died of ALS so it was very hard to see him suffer that way. He was a real fighter though and travelled to shows as long as he could. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I was fortunate enough to meet Mike in 1989 when I was named the ANA Outstanding Young Numismatist of the Year. He and his wife donated a 1927 St. Gaudens Double Eagle as part of the award. I thanked him at that time and continued to stop by and say hello anytime I was at a show he attended.

He was one of the most genuine individuals I have gotten to know in the numismatic hobby. He will be missed by many people, including myself.
