Players who SHOULD be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame but are not

I'm not really talking borderline. I'm talking players who are past the voting process that you are absolutely SHOCKED aren't enshrined. Who do you have, if anyone?

  • I always thought Bubba Smith was in the HOF.

On the other hand, with out question, Mike "Mad Dog" Curtis is a HOF player reguardless of any of this silly popularity voting.

How about listing all of the players who have winning Super Bowl rings for all 4 fingers AND their thumb. Not to mention being a major impact player. I'll start, Charles Haley.
  • I'm still surprised Ray Guy isn't in.

The football list is far, far longer than the baseball one.

Just as one example, there are so many receivers from the '60's and '70's who are worthy but voters can't seem to judge their numbers in the context of the times (especially the pre-'78 rules) when they were recorded.

Jerry Smith retired with the leading stats for a tight end when he retired, even better then Mackey and Ditka...a real shame.

Cris Carter and Jerry Kramer are the most glaring omissions to me right now.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

  • I would have to go with Charles Haley as well. He was part of some great teams and teams always had to worry about him when they played the Niners or Cowboys.
  • I know they still have plenty of time to be voted in...but along with Cris Carter...Tim Brown and Andre Reed.

I will echo Cris Carter as glaring. But I remain amazed that Jay Hilgenberg's name is not mentioned in HOF conversations. Best center I ever saw.
  • Andre Reed and Kent Hull are two Bills that are definitely deserving who come to my mind.

A couple QBs I think are deserving; Roman Gabriel and Randall Cunningham.
  • MeferMefer Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭
I will echo comments of those above of Ray Guy and Kenny Stabler. Ray Guy was arguably the greatest punter who ever played the game (perhaps now eclipsed by Shane Lechler) and really brought attention to the position. Kenny has a ring and a number of AFC Championship games. His stats are better than Joe Namath and both have one ring (I guess Kenny needed to guarantee a Super Bowl victory to get in).

Finally, out of full disclsoure, not like I am a Raider fan or anything..... ;-)

I echo the comments about Ray Guy and Ken Stabler.

I am a life-long Raider-Hater; I absolutely despise the Raiders and Al Davis. The only times I've ever rooted for the Raiders was when they'd play a team who the Chargers needed to lose in order to make the playoffs; even then, I grudgingly rooted for the Raiders. The only Raider I've ever liked was Marcus Allen (because he's from San Diego, and I watched him play in high school).

All that said, I just am completely astonished and bewildered as to why Guy and Stabler are not in the Hall of Fame.

I think Ray Guy should definitely be in.

And I, too, am a Steeler fan.

He and L.C. should go in together.

    Uh, no.
  • Lots of great names here and most all are deserving.
That being said I have to respectfully disagree that Randall Cunningham is a HOF QB.

Jerry Smith should have been a no brainer.

Not only did he retire with all time tightend records, he
put the fear of God in defensive players with his blocking.

    He just destroyed people downfield.

The sad truth about Smith is the NFL will keep him
out because he was gay and he was the first professional
    athlete to die of Aids.

On another Redskins note Larry Brown was argueably the
best running back of his day. His career was cut short by
the pounding he took, from both his number of carries
but also the fight for every yard attitude he ran with.

Sadly if it took Hanburger as long as it did to get in I still have
    hope for both of them.

Judging of the Old-Timers will get tougher as more older press
and players pass on because the younger voters taking their place
do not grasp the dif. in the stats of players back then.

If a team only throws 10 - 14 passes in a geme and the receiver catches 5
that's a great game. Some receivers did that every week. 50 - 70 catches back
    then was a great season.

That would be like a receiver today catching 15 - 20 balls every game. I haven't
seen a receiver in the modern game catching 240 - 320 balls in a season. And
that's even with these receiver friendly rules. I would hate to see todays WR's
play with the old rules. DB's were allowed to manhandle receivers back then.

One other note the voting was very biased towards certain teams and players
in the early days. Not to say he wasn't deserving, he most def. was, but as an example
Butkus was an automatic write in at middle linebacker in his day. So great linebackers
like Mike Lucci of the sorry Lions was always snubbed.

He finally makes the Pro Bowl in 1971 and wins the MVP with 5 interceptions, 2 returned for touchdowns.
And this is a middle linebacker. lol.

    Go old-timers.

    OK RANT OVER.

    Ryan Leaf.

Seriously I'd go with Guy and LC Greenwood. LC will have a tough time because there are already a lot of Steelers in the Hall and Guy has to overcome the voters' prejudice against Punters.

Excellent point on the number of players already in. So the 86 Bears have Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, Dan Hampton, and Richard Dent in the HOF. I won't belabor the Jay Hilgenberg case after this post, but my question is, is he not considered a SHOULD BE HOFer because:

    - He does not rank with the Dwight Stepehnson/Mike Webster/Dermonti Dawson echelon?
    - No one outside Chicago knows his name?
    - Is Center simply that difficult of a position to get noticed regardless of performance?
    - Is 4 players enough for a team that won a single championship and underperformed after?

Around here it's considered a travesty so I just wanted to check the non-Chicagoan point of view.

    Hilgenberg deserves to be in.

He made the All-Pro and Pro Bowl teams just about
    every year.

By the way plenty of people outside of Chicago
know his name since he was on one of the most
publicity friendly teams in NFL history.

Maybe he'd be in if he was in "The Super Bowl Shuffle"!

After Punter & Kicker ranks the lowly Center.

I definitely agree. Kent Hull basically led the Bills offensive juggernaut to 4 consecutive Super Bowls in the early '90s and helped pave the way for Thurman Thomas, who is an all-time great, HOF running back. He ran that no-huddle offense. He deserves to be in the HOF.
  • I've always thought it was unfortunate that certain positions don't get HOF recognition. Ray Guy is a perfect example. I also think it is a shame that kick returners get no love. Brian Mitchell has 23,330 all purpose yards which puts him 2nd all time only 216 behind Jerry Rice. Same for Herschel Walker. #9 All time All Purpose yards and had huge #'s in the USFL. Both get no love at all.

O-Lineman that I think should be in, Walt Sweeney and Ed Budde.
