As some of you may know, I'm active in the Glendale (CA) Coin Club and was recently named the Vice-President. For our upcoming Holiday newsletter, I thought it would be fun to try to get something more interesting to share with the club than the usual list of upcoming birthdays, winners of the previous month's door prizes, etc.
My family and I are fans of the TLC show "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" which features 7-year old Alana Thompson aka "Honey Boo Boo" who is a frequent contestant (but never the winner) of beauty pageants. Apparently, the show became one of the highest rated shows on The Learning Channel.
Anyways, I thought it would be fun to make young Honey Boo Boo an honorary member of our coin club and decided to also make her pet chicken, named "Chicken Nugget," a member of the club too. I sent them a certificate of membership along with a 2005-S Proof Jefferson Western Waters Nickel graded PCGS PR69DCAM since 2005 is the year of Honey Boo Boo's birth, hoping that they would post a photo as they do with much of their fan mail. Around a week later, the following photo was posted on their FaceBook page and is the perfect photo for our club's Holiday newsletter

Illini, you wonderfully display how a low grade coin. a local coin club, and a psuedo starlet can lead to a bold opportunity.
Well done....

I have a daughter and have always encouraged her to use her brain.
IMO, the pageants seem to be more about the MOM the anyone else. It disgusts me actually.
With that said, The OP did a great thing in in promoting coins for the ones who follow this stuff.
And this is supposedly the "real America" or the "heartland" I hear so many pundits talk about, the whole thing is just sad. Can you imagine being on a television show where the entire introduction credits is one big "your MaMa" Joke about how fat she is and the punch line is her farting at the end? I would never show my face in public again, what is wrong with these people and the ones who watch it regularly?
<< <i>Honey Boo Boo and her family aren't smart enough to know the whole world is laughing at their family and more importantly their daughter, maybe they are but are still willing to pimp her out for the semblance of riches. They are an embarrassment to them selves and they should not be embraced or encouraged as the last thing we need as a country is more copycat uneducated, obese fools dancing in front of the cameras.

The Youtube videos I have seen of Honey Boo Boo and her family, including her mother and uncle Poodle, have shown her to be quite charming and surprisingly savvy for a seven-year-old.
I don't think she is an embarrassment to herself at all.

I don't have any tea leaves to read at the moment, but the dust bunnies on my desk are showing lots of therapy and rehab in her future.

I think they are smart to profit from it.

Honey Boo Boo and her mother are laughing all the way to the bank and you'd be very naive to think otherwise.

I agree in the short term but I doubt that her 15mins is enough to set her up for life and having a bank account balance in the black doesn't really change one's station in life. I know everything in life has a price but they have made a 7year old girl into a jester with her Mom playing the part of the town idiot/slob. At some point ones dignity has to come into play I would think. In the 5mins of the show I watched they highlighted the Mom's neck cheese, hoarding, and fat-ness while encouraging the little one to talk like an idiot with false confidence and broken English after losing a pageant (again) and uncontrollably crying. Is it really healthy to repeatedly enter a not especially cute girl with a BMI # about double the appropriate range in pageants to continuously lose? Hope the money is worth it.
I don't especially care how some slobs sell out their principles to make a fast buck, my only point is this family/phenomenon represents the worst in America not the best. Nothing they have done is worthy of respect or admiration but yet some random coin club feels the need to bestow a privilege to her based off of her infamy. I guess any attention is good attention for a coin club

A girl's love for her chicken is deserving of respect.

They're smarter than you give them credit for and are laughing all the way to the bank.

Accumulation of money is not an indication of intelligence nor is it necessarily a barometer of success. I guess we just have different values and ideas about what we would subject our wife and daughters to for a couple of dollars. If my wife had neck cheese, I would get her professional help, not a TV show where she could embarrass the family for generations playing a stereotypical fat, stupid southern house wife to be mocked by the coasts all the while parading the daughter around as part of the farce. But hey that's just me, you keep on keeping on with what floats your boat buddy.
