    Buckner whiffs, Mets win.

    Bartman whiffs, Chicago s#!ts.
  • What pops to my mind since I could remember such things (1975).

    Fisk waving it fair
    Rose's 4192
Gibson'a one handed swing and limp around
Ripken shaking hands all around the stadium
    Buckner
    Bartman
Puckett robbing the homerun in WS
    Bo Jackson running on wall
    McGwire's 62nd
    Kerry Wood's 20th K
The best pitch to start a hitter off with is always strike one.

not sure about Rose's hit, havent seen that replayed too many times. The other ones are definite. As much as this one kills me, "The Catch" Dwight Clark going over Everson Walls in the end zone - sorry, i guess that doesnt count as baseball.

    Lou Gehrig's farewell speech
Yogi Berra jumping up after Larsen's perfect game
    Ball going through Buckner's legs
Jackie Robinson stealing home and Yogi flipping out
George Brett charging the umpire after the pine tar incident.

maybe a bit lower on the scale, but i will always remember the moment captured when Sid Bream made his pennant-winning slide home.

Had a little more time to reflect and have locked in 9 of 10, all of which have been mentioned, but I will consolidate here:

    1. Gehrig speech
    2. Ruth farewell
    3. Mays over shoulder catch
    4. Ty cobb slide
    5. Aaron's 715th
    6. Yogi/Larsen perfect game
    7. Eddie Gaedel at bat
    8. Gibson Dodgers home run
    9. Fisk waiving HR fair

Honorable mentions not previously posted (generally because they are more video than photo):

    1. Ruth called shot (more known in story form than photo)
    2. Billy Martin tantrum (several to choose from)
    3. Ozzie Smith back flip
    4. George Bush first pitch post-9/11
    5. Clemens baseball bat throw at Piazza
    6. Jeter head-first into stands on diving catch
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

Swoboda's diving catch of Robinson's liner in the '69 series.
What about Popeye's (Zimmer) expression right before Pedro clocked him? Maybe not iconic, but memorable nonetheless
Reggie taking off his hat running off the field after the '78 series I believe, and just steamrolling a fan.

Bill Mazeroski rounding third with the fans in the '60 World Series.

If you're talking photographs, I'd say these...and I'm using actual photographs, not TV captures. I'm sure most of you know these pictures without having to look them up. That's a true sign of an iconic photograph.

    10. Nolan Ryan "Noogie" Robin Ventura
    9. Jackie Robinson Steals Home Against Yogi Berra
    8. Eddie Gaedel at Bat
    7. Don Larson and Yogi Berra Embrace
    6. Mays Catch
    5. Joe Dimaggio Big Swing Follow Through w/Photographer in Background (Sports Illustrated)
    4. Ruth Leaning on Bat at Farewell
    3. Lou Gehrig at Microphone Hand on Head
    2. Babe Ruth Portrait (bat on shoulder)
    1. Cobb sliding into 3rd

    A few honorable mentions:

Rickey Henderson Holding 2nd Base Overhead
    Bustin Babes/Larrupin Lou's
Ted Williams With a Bunch of Bats
Mazeroski Heading for Home after HR
    Maris Swing 61st HR

As an A's fan Kirk Gibson and Derek Jeter were automatically eliminated from consideration. Yes, still bitter.

Think I would go with these top 10 also, BUT, I think I might take out Ryan/Ventura and put in the Mazeroski coming home instead.

I agree! The Conlon shot of Cobb & Austin is a classic

    image
  • For me, the most iconic images are:

    1) Gehrig's last speech
    2) Mays over the shoulder catch
    3) Shot heard round the world - perhaps tied with Pafko at the wall
    4) Gibson's limp wristed home run
    5) Buckner's error in 86 World Series
    6) Jesse Orosco falling to the ground winning the 86 World Series (probably one of my most emotional memories concerning baseball)
    7) Berra jumping on Larsen after the perfect game
    8) Pete Rose sliding into Ray Fosse during the All-Star game at home plate
    9) Fisk waving right for the home run
    10) Henderson announcing as "the best" and Ryan as strikeout king in one day.

sorry - runner up has to be the Pine Tar incident. I would even replace it as No. 10.

How about Nolan Ryan covered in blood?
  • Lots of great ones mentioned and while a lot are more memorable than others - 2 stick at more than ANY other:

1 - Mays - The Catch (1st one that came into mind) and I wasn’t even born till 1979

2 - Cobb - This was the Spikes High into 3rd

I believe these 2 - EVERY sports fan has scene and recognizes.
  • I always liked the one where Koufax is holding the 4 baseballs with black zeros written on them.

Open wounds...if Jeremy Giambi's fat a** had just slid, we wouldn't be having this "discussion".

Yeah, still bitter about that one too but due respect to Jeter.

I gotta say a couple images stuck with me from the Armando Gallaraga non-perfect game. I remember his "no way Jose" smile immediately after Joyce muffed the call and then the exchange at home plate the next day. He showed a lot of class and I hope he can salvage a career.
