Brett rookie pulled from 1975 mini wax pack

A while ago I opened a few packs from a box of 1975 Topps minis. I've opened several packs since (will try to update my original thread over the weekend with more pictures). I opened 18 packs in total and will submit the other 18 to PSA. Anyway, I pulled this beauty out of the last pack I opened (along with a Rose and Munson!). Does this look like it would grade a 9?

    AWESOME pickup.

I think on corners, print quality, etc. the card definitely has a shot at 9.

However, I think the t/b centering is potentially problematic, and may make the card worthy of a qualifier. I have not measured it precisely, but that's my initial reaction in seeing your scan.

Otherwise, it is one heck of a pull!

    Straight 7 or a 9OC (T/B). No chance at a straight 9, but even a 9 OC is $100-$125 card.

unfortunately it will not get a 9 with the tilt and top to bottom centering. probably get an 8 or 9oc. nice card, always fun to pull something like that

Very nice card. I think if you send it to SGC you will get a 8-8.5 with a small chance at a 9.
Best bet sending to them with this type of card. IMHO.

    Thanks for the input, all.

Grote - how does getting a qualifier work? Does one request on the form the highest grade with a qualifier or is it up to the individual grader?

  • Wow, amazing. The Brett looks fantastic. It’s not 50/50 centering but I can definitely still bring in a 9. It doesn’t need to be perfect. I have a 9 what that exact same centering. Great pull.

If you don't request NQ, they will automatically consider it for you though some graders use qualifiers more frequently than others.

Foo, can you post a scan of your psa 9 brett mini? I'd be shocked if PSA graded a card with T/B centering like that one a straight 9. I've submitted thousands of minis over last few years and have never gotten a straight 9 with a card centered as low as that one.

OP on your submission form if you do not want qualifiers write that in on the sides and they will honor your request.

T/B centering will hold it back. Unfortunately, while the tilt is very bothersome to me, that wouldn't keep it from a 9.
  • Morning Grote,

Sorry if I had made myself unclear. I was referring to another card I have. I don’t own a 75 Brett at all. I just meant that I’ve seen centering on cards that weren’t 50/50 including one that I own such as the centering on the Brett so centering like that shouldn’t hold it back from a 9 is what I meant. There is a slight tilt like Joey said (nice try btw) but this is a candidate for a PSA 9 all the way. Very strong card.

that is one sweet card. And I've seen MANY cards with comparable centering get 9 NQ.

As an avid mini collector, I have yet see one (with exception of mechanical errors). Scan?

The tilt is not holding that card back, it's t/b centering.

Actually, the more I look at it, the card appears to be diamond cut, not just image tilt. I'm still unsure what PSA does if a card has such a bad diamond cut that it won't fit in the holder, but this one doesn't seem that bad.

Actually I'm wrong, the card is a rectangle, so it's just tilt.
  • There is a card I recently submitted. The card looks amazing and all corners couldn’t be any more sharper. However I did notice on mine that the t/b wasn’t centered – exactly like this one. Well I sent it an anyways just for giggles to try and get a feel of what PSA expects (card being submitted wasn’t a high dollar card at all but a 10 would of paid for my sub a put a few extra dollars in my pocket) and it came back a 9. So even with t/b off such as this one, it can still come back a 9 however with vintage, PSA does seem to be quite picky so with that being said, it’s a gamble and we won’t know for sure but one thing I think we can all agree on is that this card deserves a holder. I would send it in a just see what it shoots back as. Even an 8 would be great in anyone’s collection.

Congrats on a very nice pull! I'm with Grote on this one. I would guess it gets a straight 7 regardless of whether or not you ask for NQ's. The two issues I see are t/b centering and what appears to be a nick/tiny notch in the left edge about even with the top of the photo border. It looks like the nick is associated with a small surface bubble.

    A 7 still brings about $60-$80.
  • Sweet Pull and it will pay for the pack and then some. PSA 7-8. Good Luck!

Beautiful card. I'm sure it's been discussed here a lot, but T/B centering issues bother me a lot less than L/R. While L/R is obvious at first glance, I actually had to look top first, then bottom, to note the centering.

On the mini's when measuring t/b centering, I measure from bottom edge to the player name. Of course, on top, I measure from top edge to team name. I'm pretty certain this is how they do it.

Here's to hoping indy is right on the t/b centering. I'll probably submit this card, a few other minis (I got Rose and Ryan cards with nicer centering) and a some other misc cards some time next month.
