NewP Blacksmith Token Wood 14 arrives, and a Discovery Piece!!

ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,940 ✭✭✭✭✭
Fresh from Canada my second Blacksmith Token (Copper) arrived and I set to attributing it using the drawings and photo files. Pegging it at Wood 14 was easy, it's brass and the back of the base of the head is more deeply shaped than other related varieties. One on the recent findings is that there are different reverse dies with this obverse, five recorded that show different lengths of the reverse figures left outstretched arm. However, try as I might no other arm and shoulder looked quite like this one, many slender and ladylike instead of the short triangular one on my coin. SO......image. I sent images to the main authority on these and in his words "it's a New die variety for sure". Isn't that sweet! image. imageimageimage

    Congrats, I think.image

But...I need some help here. You referred to the back of the base of the head. Where should I look, or should I just use my imagination?image

...this series is the most complicated one I've seen yet. Delightful. Only if there were more coins available. Unbelievably scarce.

Coingrats on the discovery piece! And also on your pursuit of a new, and quite obscure track of numismatics. I've been involved with coin collecing for 30+ years, yet I learned about the very existence of these coins from your posts the past few weeks. And it takes a pure numismatist to appreciate the appearance of these items, it's a really low percentage of coin collectors that would want to buy own and collect such an asthetic. The good news is that finds like this are still possible to make as long as you have the reference books.. well pamphlets image the attribution guide is what? Line drawings by hand, and dotty half-tone photographs? Splendid!

This is the finest known and Charlton Tokens book plate coin. Much detail was simply not ever engraved, such as the reverse figures head! Compare my coins thick triangular arm with the coin in the book you can see the difference...image
