Just curious, how many rounds to baseball drafts usually go? You would think doing this twice a year and going dozens of rounds each time basically any high schooler playing on the varsity team would eventually get drafted.

They only do 1 amateur draft each year these days. Starting in 2012, they trimmed it down to 40 total rounds (1238 people got drafted in 2012).
There are around 37,000 high schools across the USA, and maybe around 6000 colleges and universities? Many of those will have baseball teams, so you take those numbers into account and you have a massive draft pool where only 2% get picked.
In episode 11, they showed a moment from early in game 1. Romo was sitting on the dugout steps watching the game, and apparently Miguel Cabrera walked by and yelled "Romo! I'll be waiting for your slider."
Ironic, considering how the season ended with Cabrera taking a fastball for a called strike 3.
The Giants had been talking to RHP Brandon Lyon for the extra bullpen spot, but he signed with the Mets today. In responce, the Giants re-signed RHP Ramon Ramirez.
So, after trading Ramon Ramirez and Andres Torres to the Mets for Angel Pagan, they're all teammates on the Giants a year later. Ramirez and Torres had bad years in NY last year. Hopefully they'll leave their "suck" in the Big Apple and be ready to play World Champ baseball in 2013.
Edit to add: it's a minor league deal with a spring training invite. So, they still have 1 spot left on the 40 man.
Angel Villalona got his visa, so he'll be reporting to Spring Training. I suspect this also means he'll no longer be "restricted", and the Giants 40 man roster is now full.
So, baring any unexpected changes, we've got most of the same team that played in the WS, except:
Bullpen: Mota out. Bench: Huff, Nady, Theriot out.
Torres seems to be the slam-dunk Nady replacement. The only battle spots will be the righty-bullpen spot, utility infielder spot, and maybe a utility-everything guy.

I hope the haircut helps with the maturity that he's been lacking, and that it carries over into actually developing a workout and eating regiment that isn't just lounging and fast food. Many attributed his horrible season last year to his body no longer being able to tolerate eating so poorly and not working out. It was kind of strange to see a 2x Cy Young award winner be relegated to the bullpen (although he dominated in that role).

From what I heard, he went on a diet and exercise routine (that wasn't sanctioned by the team) designed to loose weight and hit a specific weight. Good for the average joe, but not good for a professional athlete. He lost muscle mass along with his fat. The team had him on the weights a few months into the season, and his numbers started changing for the better. It wasn't until October when he was pitching out of the bullpen when we saw signs of the dominant Lincecum again.
Bruce Bochy's son Brett is in camp. He's an under-the-radar kid who's done pretty well in his 2 seasons in the minors. 2.05 era, 0.834 whip, and a 4.69 so/bb ratio in 92.1 innings over 2 seasons.
With Torres and Pagan playing in the WBC, Gary Brown will get a lot of playing time this spring. Time to see what this kid can do. Boch also said that Belt and Pill will be getting some OF time as well. Roger Kieschnick will probably get a good look as well.
Clay Hensley signed a minor league deal with the Reds, so he joins the Alumni club.
Two 40 man roster guys are officially out of options, so if they don't make the team they're getting DFA'ed:
Conor Gillaspie: 3b. He got picked in the 1st round (supplemental pick) of the same draft we got Buster Posey in. Apparently he demanded that the Giants sign him to a Major League deal (immediate addition to the 40 man roster with a MLB debut in his first contract year) and the Giants gave it to him. He's not a prospect, and the few times he's been in SF, he wasn't remarkable. The one odd thing is that while he hit .286/.364/.386 in hitter friendly San Jose, he hit .287/.335/.420 in pitcher friendly Richmond.
I don't see this guy being a threat to any current Giants position players, and he will probably be better off finding his fortune elsewhere.
Yusmeiro Petit: RHP, he was a prospect once upon a time in the Mets organization, but never panned out. He made 1 spot start vs the Padres last year, giving up 2 runs in 4.1 innings in a losing effort (courtesy of the combined suckage of Brad Penny and Clay Hensley. If no one claims him, I can see the Giants sending him to Fresno instead of letting him go. We need some emergency guys in AAA.
Gillaspie is good as gone. Unless he can turn into a utility infielder like Theriot there will probably not be room for him. I can't imagine him usurping Panda or Arias.
The team needs to find a few starting pitching prospects or do something else to fill in the holes. At the end of this season there could be up to two, or perhaps three vacancies in the starting rotation. Unless they have someone fastracked through the farm or have targets lined up on the open market, the pitching rotation could be in for some trouble starting next year.

Cain and Bumgarner are under contract past 2013. Voggy has a $6.5 mil option for 2014, and you know the Giants will take it. There's 3 guys who'll pitch in 2014.
Lincecum's the big question mark. If he returns to form, I could see the Giants locking him up Cain style.
Zito's option probably won't vest (he'll need 200 ip this year), so the Giants will either buy him out for $7 mil (what a contract!) or extend him.
Down on the farm, the Giants have a few intriguing prospects that could be in future rotations. Surkamp's in AAA. Heston's probably going to start the year in AAA. Both guys on are on the 40 man roster. Crick and Blackburn will probably play in AA this season. Stratton's likely to be in A unless he goes nuts and earns a promotion to AA or higher.
Unless he totally loses it this year, Vogey will have his option picked up. Zito's won't be unless he goes 18-5, 2.75 which despite his good postseason probably won't happen. Right or wrong in my mind I'm thinking the team would be open to bringing Zito back past next year if he takes a pay cut and a short contract. I can't imagine another team signing him long term for big money.
Despite what Giants fans want to believe, I don't think Timmy will be back next year. Fans might think otherwise but I don't think Timmy liked his time here nor does he want to stay unless the Giants really overpay to keep him around. This time last year he turned down a long term nine figure contract that would have handsomely rewarded him. If that was any indicator you know he's either got one foot out the door or he's holding the team hostage.

So I guess the thing with Theriot is that he wanted to start, not be a backup.
Still, it's kinda odd that as soon as they won the World Series, he went home and was totally done with being a Giant. Didn't go the parade, pretty much ignored Brian Sabean until he ran into him at the winter meetings. I guess he didn't like it here.
Theriot probably wasn't thrilled about losing his starting job halfway through the season to Marco Scutaro. At least he kept his feelings private and remained a team player until the season officially ended instead of going public during the season and poisoning the clubhouse with a bad attitude. He cited a family emergency for skipping the parade. True or not we don't know but we should be grateful he hustled home for the winning score instead of sabotaging the team by missing 3rd base or getting tagged out intentionally.

<< <i>Do Timmy and Buster still hate each other? >>
Well, Timmy keyed Buster's car, and Buster retaliated by cutting Lincecum's hair off while he slept. Timmy put liquid heat on Buster's jock before he got to practice, and Buster responded by kidnapping Timmy's dog Cy and sending fake ransom notes. After Timmy broke into Buster's house and kidnapped his twin children, Bruce Bochy stepped in and told them that he was going to bend them both over and beat them in the rear with the World Series trophy unless they behaved. After that, they've been icy and cold, but so far no further acts of aggression have occurred.
Brian Wilson has instructed his agent that he won't try to find a team until he's 100% ready to go, and doesn't expect to be there until after the season starts.

The open spots on the roster are 1 bullpen spot and 2 bench spots. Here's who's left in camp and fighting for a job
Tony Abreau (utility infielder), been hurt most of the spring. (40 man) Francisco Peguero (OF): has impressed this spring, but he's not in line for a starting job. (40 man) Jean Machi (RHP): meh (40 man) Dan Runzler (LHP): solid spring, but blocked by other arms. (40 man)
Chad Gaudin (RHP): will probably take that last bullpen spot as the new Guillermo Mota (NRI) Scott Proctor (RHP): bad spring. (NRI) Ramon Ramirez (RHP): bad spring. (NRI) Guillermo Quiroz (C): if Sanchez can't make the opening day roster, Quiroz will get the call. (NRI) Wilson Valdez (IF): Will probably get the call as a utility guy since Abreau has been hurt most of the spring. Cole Gillespie (OF): has had a good spring. Since they don't want Peguero on the bench, Gillespie may get the nod.
Ramon Ramirez got released, and it's not a surprise.
Wilson Valdez got released, and that kind of is. Abreau's played 1 game all spring and has been hurt most of the time.
Nick Noonan is getting called back up to big-league camp, so it's possible that they may decide to start the year with the youngster as their backup infielder. I know the Giants are usually loath to let young players rot on the bench, but maybe they're desperate?
Runzler got optioned, Otero got waved, and Chad Gaudin made the team.
Brock Bond won the Harry S Jordan award that's voted on by the Giants players for the best rookie in his first big league spring training camp.
Past winners include:
2012: Dan Otero 2011: Brandon Belt 2010: Darren Ford 2009: Joe Martinez 2008: Brian Boco ck 2007: Tim Lincecum 2006: Daerin McMains 2005: Scott Munter 2004: Brian Dallimore 2003: Jason Ellison 2002: Felix Escalona (still got waved before the season started) 2001: Pedro Feliz

Heh, Giants just traded Scott Proctor and his minor league contract to the Orioles for "cash considerations." Heh, they'll probably have them write the check out to Buster Posey.
Abreu, Pill, and Surkamp to the DL. Noonan officially called up, so he's won the backup infielder job. Peguero and Machi optioned to the minors.
With Peguero going down, that can only mean that Cole Gillespie is getting his contract purchased shortly.
HOWEVER... Pablo fealt pain in his troubled elbow, adding further uncertainty to his status for opening day. It's a very real possibility that Joaquin Arias will be the Giants starting 3rd baseman on Opening Day, and that's a serious offensive downgrade.
Posey's catching days are dependent on his health. A big part of his value is the ability to handle the Giants' pitching staff. He'll catch as long as they think he can.
Apparently the Giants are considering having 3 catchers on the roster, so the decision right now is whether to carry a 3rd catcher (Quiroz) or a 5th outfielder (Gillespie).
They opted for the 3rd catcher, so Quiroz has been added to the 25 man, and Gillespie was re-assigned.
Well darn, I had already bought a Gillespie rookie card to add to my collection.
3 catchers, that's a bit much. Apparently Quiroz is THE backup catcher while Sanchez is recovering from his shoulder issue. Apparently he can still hit, so he'll be the off-the-bench switch hitter. Hope he can hit better than what he's shown.
Brand new season but same old story...Cain gets Cain'd, the offense stinks and Kershaw maintains ownership of the Giants lineup. Baseball is supposedly a team sport but Kershaw single-handedly beat the Giants. Things have to change fast or this will be a long season.
Yeah, yeah, yeah I know it's game 1 of 162 but I did not like what saw.
This season is beginning to smell a lot like 2011.

with the 1,496th pick of the 2005 Draft (50th round), the Angels selected high school pitcher Buster Posey. He obviously didn't sign.
Earlier in the draft, in 28th round, with the 852th overall pick, the Giants selected a juco pitcher named Sergio Romo.

Apparently the Giants are considering having 3 catchers on the roster, so the decision right now is whether to carry a 3rd catcher (Quiroz) or a 5th outfielder (Gillespie).

Yeah, yeah, yeah I know it's game 1 of 162 but I did not like what saw.
This season is beginning to smell a lot like 2011.

<< <i>Brand new season but same old story...Cain gets Cain'd, the offense stinks and Kershaw maintains ownership of the Giants lineup. Baseball is supposedly a team sport but Kershaw single-handedly beat the Giants. Things have to change fast or this will be a long season.
