Whats the value of a counterfeit Morgan Dollar?

I know some people collect these. I found one at flea market yesterday. Its an 1885 cc Morgan counterfeit. It looks VERY good from the eye, but weighs quite less than a standard Morgan Dollar. Enough to trick the novice. I would grade it (if it were real) at XF45. I thought it was neat and picked it up for $15. The only thing off seems to be the cc mintmark. Whats are the opinions here for those who have dealt with Morgan counterfiets?

The value of most counterfeit Morgan Dollars is 0. The only exception I could think of that I would be willing to pay for would be some of the Micro-O fakes that the grading services used to slab as genuine before they realized they were not.

Depends on its relative age - contemporary or modern?

If contemporary then it has some value - maybe $15-30
Noting that it is a CC mintmarked piece, I could see a collected paying at the high end of the range noted aboe.
If it's modern, then maybe $1 - regardless of date/mm/grade
  • This was too neat to not to pick up. Who ever made ti did a fantastic job. It kinda scaes me when wondwering how many of these are out there bein gbought up as real. A novice cuold try to buy this as real for around $500. Scary. I think I will use it as a tool to teach new minismatists how good fakes can be and to watch out on ebay and such. well worth the $15.00 i paid IMOP.
  • its too worn for a contemporary fake. I think some items were bought with this one. It has definately circulated.

The micro-O counterfeits are the most easily identified parts of a larger family tree of contemporary counterfeits made on silver planchets. The related counterfeits, with normal O mint marks, are also collectible as part of this group of contemporary counterfeits. More modern counterfeits are worth whatever their metal content is, which is usually 0, especially if they're coming from a flea market.

A contemporary fake means it was made around the times it circulated, and was therefore
created to be passed off as the real deal. So I'm assuming this IS a contemporary fake.

Then again!!! Modern counterfeits are now made with artificial wear to be passed-off as real.

A photo would be great image

Need pics. Sounds like a modern Chinese made fake and the value would be zero.

If it is contemporary to the period then that's a different story.

    Need pics.

Bullion value if it's made out of silver.
    When in doubt, don't.

The fact that you paid real money for bad money does not give it value.
Get stuck with a counterfeit bill and try passing it can land you in jail.

The guy he bought it from would probably say it's value is 15 bucks

Actually probably something along the line of $13.00 as he probably paid about two bucks to the importer that brought it in from China. BTW both the seller and the buyer in fact committed crimes in this case.
How would we be taking this case if the buyer had come on here telling us he got this great deal on a CC Morgan over the weekend at the flea market for less than melt. And being new to the hobby not knowing it was a fake. BTW that guy selling might of got $150.00 for the next one he put out for sale from that newbie.

He sold it as counterfiet. Im collecting it as such and have no intention on selling it. No crime could have occured. Mens Rea is required when a crime has occured. Plus we all know some people collec these unique items.

I wil try to get some pics up so you all can see.

Also he was not a dealer, just a guy selling a bunch of junk and antiques. It was clearly marked counterfeit by the seller.

This is just an neat conversation piece. Thats all.

Im somewhat offended that anyone here would hint to the fact there was criminal intent by either myself or the seller. We both knew what was happening and I have no intention of selling it. Does this mean anyone with a Henning Nickel or any other counterfiet money is commiting a crime? I think not. is so call thr feds we got a big scam going here.image

I was referring to the technical aspect of the Hobby Protection act. Not accusing you or anyone but bringing out the fact that there can be differing views on this subject.

OK, you say you have no intention of selling the counterfeit morgan, but the title of your thread clearly asks the question as to the value on the coin?
It does make one wonder what your motivation might be.

If you say it's not for sale, I'll take your word on that.

TwinTurbo was a member here that was selling lots of counterfeits on the bst and labeled them as much. Glad he is no longer here as he cheated me on a deal

These are modern, not contemporary counterfeits, and worth about $3.

Counterfeits are a plague on the hobby. Value should be zero.

Ask him where he got the counterfeits from. Try to trace it back to the source, and then notify authorities. It is my understanding that in order for the coins to be legally sold as counterfeits, they have to say "copy" or something on them.
