How's the finish on the new Alice Paul gold coins?

Are there any weird streaking or weird color issues like with this first spouse .9999 gold coin?

  • The finish on mine is excellent and there are no blemishes. It has been noted on other threads that toning can happen on the slabbed coins like the one in your picture. Not sure if there has ever been an explanation for it either. I have a slabbed 2011 69 $5 commemorative gold coin that started toning very soon after I got it, not attractive either. image

I think that ugly toning spot is either some silver or iron in the gold, it probably was a bad batch they cooked up.image

With the $5 commems it would make sense, as they're not pure gold but about 8% copper. I really like the streaky coppery look on the new commem $5s. At least they're unique.

My PCGS MS69 Lucy Hayes has a weird silvery patch on her face so I wonder if it really is tainted. Are .9999 Buffalos doing this after the red-streak issue?

Ah yes, "Lemonade Lucy" Hays. She banned the serving of alcohol from White House functions. Her husband as was the recipient of the 1876 stolen presidential election. Needless to say he is not among my favorite past Chief Executives. He was not a terrible president, but he should have never have had the office in the first place.

Maybe this coin is part of the curse of Lucy Hays. She wasn't much for other people having much fun, and looking at the stain on this piece can't be pleasurable.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Wow, you get cursed for serving lemonade? Tough crowd. I have noticed a few other "cursed" Spouse coins out there. Lemonade must have been popular back in the day. Mine look decent so far. It seems to take a few months to develop if it does. In the mean time watch out for that scurvy Bill.
