For me it was post show drinks with Dale Friend, Larry Shepherd and Gregg Bingham. I tried not to say anything stupid and to just soak up the stories they were telling. I mostly talked shoes with Dale's wife as my contribution to the conversation.

Mine was when I first attended a show with selling on my mind,boy did I.I would have been happy making 500 dollars that day.Well I walked out with over 1800$ in my pocket. This was the first time I tried to sell some of my collection.

Having had the chance to spend some time with SeaEagleCoins prior to him leaving the business and securing one of the prestigious CRO hats for him...

It was a successful stealth covert mission of sweet talking DW out of one without purchase while JA the guardian of the hats was nowhere to be seen.

I think it was after having a few beers too many with Boiler78. We decided to split ownership of a coin that I subsequently won at auction (late night session).

In the AM, neither one of us could figure out how we were going to split ownership of the coin.

Since I've only been to one show it is easy.

Sitting with Gregg Bingham, soaking everything up I could in the time he would spend with me when he says (and I'm paraphrasing), " Bonnie. Bonnie, let me see the Cincy. Here Nick, look at this Cincy." He hands me his 68* Cincy, and goes right back to talking about world finance and politics, leaving my brain mush and the floor caked in my drool.

I voted for Gregg Bingham that day, even though he wasn't running and their weren't any elections.

I had lunch with the late Bear (Abe). He told me a few stories, and showed me a few coins. One story was how he made one of the first high grade Morgans. I want to say it was one of the first MS68s, but I may be mistaken. Anyway, he bought it raw for high price, had it graded, and worked out a deal with a dealer to promote the coin when Abe sold it at auction. It sold for a 5x profit, and then sold again at auction a year later, for 10x the price Abe paid.

LS let me be a fly on the wall and walk with her around the FUN bourse about 3 years ago.

Great fun watching her wheel and deal and of course comment about the coins she saw.

The only rule .......I had to be absolutely quiet.

Not at a show. But I was invited behind the counter to eat lunch at a b&m, that was pretty amazing. I see that as a very nice gesture of goodwill & trust! The dealer was Julian Liedman and the shop was Bonanza Coins.

After the show I enjoy talking coins over dinner and wine with fellow DMPL Morgan Dollar Enthusiast. I sure am looking forward to FUN in nine weeks seeing everybody and doing it all over again.






The PCGS luncheon is always at the top of my list when attending the shows.

Margaritas (no salt) with Lloyd at one of the FUN show hotels' bar looking out on the yachts tied up outside.
"Want like to see what I got last night at the auction?" he asks.
"Of course," I answer between slurps. (He was buying.)
Out of his pocket comes a PCGS holder. He lays it on the counter and nudges it over.
It's a Morgan. Even in the bad light the lustre gets my attention, and I somehow manage to stay on the stool when I see the date and grade: 1893-S MS64.
It's still the prettiest '93-S I've ever seen in any grade.

The most bizarre was after having had way too much Jameson irish whiskey with MFH in a hotel bar at a Baltimore show a couple years ago... I had a naked lady of the night jump on the elevator with me, who I wrapped in my coat and waited in the lobby to get it back for dry cleaning.

Mike is one of the ones I enjoy meeting up with at Florida shows. In regards to the naked lady....that's NUTS!

As I write this, two experiences come to mind, both from the 2002 ANA in NYC. The first is being at Sotheby's for the auction of the Farouk-Fenton 1933 Double Eagle. The other was an exhilarating walk back to the hotel from Tiffany's (where a cab had dropped us off), after purchasing a bauble for my wife. As we neared the Marriott in Times Square, a spectacular thunderstorm was breaking out. I have never heard thunder so loud, reverberating off the tall buildings. Then we watched an amazing "light show," compliments of Mother Nature's lightning flashes over the Big Apple.

Another memorable moment was the auction where the 1944-P Walker in 68 went for 115K. I will never forget the gasps, audible silence and auction catalog shuffling (to make sure everybody was on the correct lot). Mike Printz and I were sitting a row apart and the look on his face was priceless. It was very Shemp like. I actually was on that coin only to be outbid by 82K.

It was at the Rosemount show in Chicago. A buddy of mine was with me, I had hoped by going, it would restart his interest in coins. He had purchased many coins from Bowers & Ruddy Galleries in the past. We rounded a corner and there was Q. David Bowers with an assistant.
Bowers is the big leagues to both of us, and after we exchanged pleasantries, David said, "If you guys have a few minutes, why don't you come on in and sit down for a visit with us."
We did and it was a very pleasant experience, one we still talk about.

Drinks after with Brian Wagner wherupon at least a gallon of beer was consumed between the two of us (I'm a lightweight). Following this I ran into Don Willis and we "discussed" the merits of the sniffer.

Lots of dinners with Brian, Rick Snow, Charmy Harker. Always fun.

Bar hopping in Chicago at the ANA with Charmy was a hoot as well.

Breakfast with Brian and Stewart Blay. I think he's got an interesting story to tell about EVERY coin he's ever bought, and perhaps even more interesting stories about the ones that got away.

I need to get back into the show rotation. I bought a new house last January and really have been playing "dead" since then.
