Scuffmarks on a slab

A while back, we bought a used Camry for the wife. The headlight lens had become hazy, so I asked the dealer to buff them out before I would take it.
When the car was ready, I discovered they had left their towel with plain old rubbing compound in the car! Now, a year later, the headlights were hazy again. I pull out the rubbing compound and a wool buffer pad on my drill, and they looked like new in 5 minutes or so. I know they make expensive "headlight renew" kits for this purpose, and they make scuff remover for slabs. I'm wondering if the rubbing compound would work on a slab? If I had a break out candidate, I'd scuff up a slab and see if this works.
Has anyone tried this? Rubbing compound is cheap compared to both of these specialized products.
Thanks,
Bob

I use PlastX exclusively. You can pick it up at any auto parts store and probably places like Walmart. Use a dark colored, soft rag. Hard to see on a white one.
