According to this little trinket I picked up from my dealer, at least.

Gotta be at least 45 years old.

Well, for circulating coinage, the San Francisco Mint did close it's doors with 1955 being the last year.

That is, until 1968 but then I expect that the item you're displaying was produced/created between 1956 and 1967.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • "The San Fran mint no longer exists!" I think the building is still there, but the San Francisco Branch of the United States Mint did close during the 1950's never to reopen.

In 1965, the U.S. Treasury Department did open an "Assay Office" in San Francisco which is still in operation, but the Mint is still closed down. image

The "Assay Office" was re-designated a mint in 1988.

I used to live a half block away from the new mint. It stands high atop a granite outcropping and loks like a fortress!

That's pretty cool, never seen that one before...course the SF Mint was only idle for 13 years.

is the SF Assay Office and the SF mint the same thing ?

i heard that SF started back minting back in 1965 and looked up some info

David Lange wrote that SF made over 200 million 1964 cents back in 1965 at SF ....
so would this be at the mint ?

<< <i>What did they turn the old mint building into? Office space? Surely they're not letting that much good real estate sit around and do nothing? >>

It's still the SF Mint location, sitting on top of Mint Hill.

We used to joke that there were guns trained on us from the Mint building. Actually, I'm not sure how much of a joke it really was.
