Why are most silver bars weighed in troy ounces?(possible dumb question) Is that the same as US ounces? I once had a Troy pound of silver that was only 12 U.S. ounces....

US ounce = 28.35 grams
<< <i>Troy oz = 31.10 grams
US ounce = 28.35 grams >>
I've never heard of the avoirdupois ounce refered to as a US ounce but both systems are used in this country with each being used for a different purpose.

<< <i>The Troy system of weights is reserved for precious metals and there are 12 Troy ounces in a Troy pound. Everything else is weighed in the avoirdupois system of weights. >>
Ah, but I'm a little fuzzzy on from there up. I have 80oz of silver.
So if wishing to weight the total weight:
Do I only stick with per oz measurements?
or Can I say 4.17 troy lbs?
or Every can I say 3.125 regular pounds?
When I watched them weight a large large lot of silver on Pawn Stars, it looks like they weight on a typical american scale.
I don't know how they converted or determined the value.
I don't know what to use, other than ozs right now.
Good question OP!

Many scales have a ozt setting. If not, just weight it in grams (or kilograms) then divide by 31.1 to get troy ounces.

Just use troy ounces. Troy pounds is almost never, ever used. Unless you're buying silver from a misleading ebay listing. Kitco does also list a spot price per kilogram of PMs, in various currencies, though that isn't really a common size in North America.

Here's my thought, someone correct if it's wrong:
(I'm not sure, just trying the math to see)
You have 80 troy ounces.
6.66 troy pounds.
So you have 2488 grams.
87.76 ounces.
5.48 pounds
