Why is this 1879 S Morgan so much?

As I state all the time the 1879 S morgan is the only year and mint I collect other than toned coins
but this one I just can't bid on. When I first saw it listed a week or so back I messaged the seller was
it a typo on the start price and never heard back from him. To day I see it is relisted with the same
start price. Any ideas why so much?

I think the seller maybe confused-it is not the reverse of 1878

I don't see anywhere that he is claiming reverse of 78.

Maybe he looked it up wrong, but that coin is worth all of $75-85. They are very common in that grade, and the toning on that coin is ugly to boot.

Why are you attracted to this common date?

Watch it...... that is also a mini hoard date of mine. Just a great looking date for Morgans.

A real question...we're you born in 1979? Do you like the strike better than other dates? Are you looking for varieties? Or did you just get a notion that you were going to focus on one accessible date? I have a number of early San Fran dates and they are amazingly struck (much better than the laid back New Orleans coins) so I see the appeal...

either an error or a dreamer. The coin is high retail 100 bucks tops.

  • Truth be told about my hoard of 79 S Morgans which now is about 5 boxes of 20 and
all different TPGs and TWGs I do not know. I worked on a set of Morgans and got to
about 95 towards it and then realized I could never afford the keys so I sold them. The
year and mint just struk my fancy I guess for one reason there and so many different
stages of proof and proof like and tones and bright white ones they're just nice. I was
born in 1950 and I do have a small hoard of all kinds maybe more than the 79 S Morgans.
Everyone has one year and mint they are drawn to and the 79 S Morgan is mine.

And some people say collectible bullion is overpriced. This is even more over the top that what 4 oz engelhards are going for nowadays.
The difference is, 4 oz engelhards are going for stoopid prices, 1879 s morgans aren't.

It's toned, that's why. It must be worth 15-20 times the regular FMV, right...? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't pay his price if it was monster toned, which this one obviously is not.

Tiny - collect what you enjoy and have fun with your coins. That is the mantra around here.

Perhaps he's one of those guys who thinks that ANY toning is good toning. Therefore he has priced this as if it has "monster toning." I think the toning is really a detriment to this piece, and for that reason, the Gray Sheet bid of $95 would be "all the money" so far as I'm concerned.

Unless his pictures are way off, that toning is awful. Especially where someone wiped it off her face.

    The guy is a dreamer.

I think the seller is just optimistic, for instance look at this listing,

probably the ugliest rings I have ever seen

Also like the date. Bot a great roll off EBAY about 7 years ago from someone who had it over 20 years. When I got the roll, there were only 19 coins in it. Emailed seller, who forgot they had the best one graded by PCGS. Got a MS64 rattler in mail that would grade 65 anyday.

Someone's trying to set a market for a common grade 79S. PCGS lists a pop over 35,000 in that grade.

Numismedia value, $85. Recent eBay sales show an average of $80.

Anyone else notice the fingerprint(s) on the obverse in the second photo?
