What's the most popular Non-MS grade among collectors?

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'd argue XF45 and AU58 are the most popular grades among collectors due to price and availabilty. What say you and what's your favorite grade?

Depends on the series. I like the highest grade before the big jump in price in the next higher grade.

That sums it up for me also. For the more common 19th century items, MS or PR 64 often works for me.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I would say xf-40 and AU-58. I dont like 45 because you pay too much and when you go to sell the dealers always say its just an XF and lowball you.

I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

  • In my case F-12...you can find some nice scarcer dates in that grade at reasonable prices. It also suites the budget of a lot wider range of coin collectors.

AU58. Nice AU58 liner MS graded coins are bringing strong money due to popularity.

It really depends on the series. One of my favorite ways to spend time at a show is to search for AU58 coins that have that 63/64 look. There are a few gorgeous coins with just slight wear that can be had for a fraction of the MS price. Obviously I'm not using this strategy with bust gold, early dollars, or 1916-D Mercs!

The registry collectors are driving these high prices for many 58's.

I also like 58's with the high grade look. These used to be refered to as supersliders. Unfortunately, dealers usually charge a premium for these coins.
